Hi been shown a card trick today and realy want to get to the bottom of it .

A Deck is shuffled and then you are asked to say stop at any point , he places a card from the top onto the table u can stop at 1 or after 20 etc up to you. he then picks them up and puts them back into the pack splits the pack into 4 quaters and leaves about 5-10 cards seperate in which he puts 1 more onto the top of each pile. he then gives you the top card of the card which is left and tells you to put it back into a pile anywhere , he then shuffles and lays the cards back on the table and is able to find it. completely stumped any help pretty please lol.
 
Cards probably have a pattern on the back, he will simply insert your card upside down.

Without seeing the cards I am not 100% though.

My mate did pretty much the same trick to me but he just didnt shuffle at the end, it endured him just placing the cards down on certain piles in a certain order and counting them

Maybe its a simular trick

This is where he does it - In this trick he keeps the card in his hand while shuffling I believe. It is possible to learn how to shuffle a deck of cards while keeping one of them hidden in your hand so you can place it wherever you want in the deck and produce it later.
 
Check for a rotation of the deck while you are picking up a card, I had a set which were ever so slightly tapered so no matter how much you shuffle, split and re-shuffle the chosen card will stick out at one end ever so slightly. Ask him to do it again, when you have picked your card put it back in the opposite way around to what you picked it out of the deck from, then see if he can perform the trick :)

This is what we used to do, but some cards of symmetrical patterns on the back.

Yeah it is a little more tricky using this method if that is the case, he will be holding a card back or counting the cards.

I used to do close up magic for weddings and company conventions, made a packet a few years back.

I would tell you what he did but then you wouldnt appreciate it as much, its always dissapointing when I let someone in on the secret of one of my tricks
