A challenge

First and foremost that PSU is shocking !!! no pun intended, and a GTX 580 ..... really??? I know its still a great card but tech has moved on a great deal since then fella and with only a **B-Grade** 500GB HDD I mean come on for the few quid more get a new 1TB drive.

Then the final nail in that spec is that chipset does not support any overclocking full stop! to overclock on the "K" series Haswell CPU's you must be on the Z87 chipset. ;)

Had a go at spec'ing out these builds but think I will just leave it to you guys and I'll just enjoy the building and cable sleeving.

Foremost why does the mobo say it is a Z87 board?
"Gigabyte H87M-HD3 Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard"
Should it not be
Gigabyte H87M-HD3 Intel H87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard?

At least get to claw some of my dignity back. Seems its a typo. ;) But i guess I should have checked the small print.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z87M-D3H Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £97.99
1 x Gigabyte H87M-HD3 Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £73.99
Total : £182.78 (includes shipping : £9.00).

Gonna do some reading up a little more on compatible boards/chipsets/cpu's twice in 1 thread.. (walk of shame)

I am trying to convince my friends that pc is the way to go and that console is outdated as we all know so my challenge is for the best pc build including os as the Xbox one will come with its own so this must match the performance for a lower price or exceed it for a higher price it must be small because my friends don't have room for a 900d or anything crazy and so the best build will get built 7 to 10 times and they person with the best build will get to name them all happy searching ;)

Get him a PS4.

And some punctuation skills.

If he wants a PC, spend double.

I thought consoles were normally sold at a loss and that Microsoft and Sony make their money on the games? so I think specifying a similar spec PC is impossible.

Also, please all remember, if speccing B-Grade make sure there is enough in stock. Op wants to be able to build 7+ machines.

Also OCUK would probably give a substantial discount on six similar units, I have not gone for cheap as can be seen, but good components in a compact space with colourful choice.

If a GPU upgrade was wanted then a PSU upgrade would also be required. CPU is going to be loud with stock cooler. The 8670d is about 40% the performance compared to a 7770 (Xbox One Performance) and as you are on stock cooler you wont have much overclocking room. 180GB SSD is nice but at least 500GB is needed for a gaming PC.

I agree CPU aftermarket cooler would be a good option.
180Gb SSD gives plenty of initial overhead for storage but there is space for additional drives. Bluray and DVDRW gives a bit more scope.
My own power testing with an 8350 on eight workers prime and coincident heaven 2.5 on an HD6950 gives 350W at the wall. probably much more than this system requires. But point noted

That's not how you should value consoles vs pc's. Very few people have PC's only to run it as a console replacement with prettier graphics, they get used as PC's as well. You have to add at least £300 or so to the budget of the desktop to account for the fact you're getting a (bleeding quick) pc in the bundle as well as the gaming grunt.

If you're looking at just a console beater with no other use for it then it'll basically be a steambox linux machine which could be cheaper, but kind of missing the point of PC gaming tbh.

Anything from a 660Ti or 7950 up should really show the consoles what's what for the most part, and if you want to go that route it only costs about £550 or so with a decent AMD CPU.

But I prefer looking at your overall purchase price:
Console c. £400
Games x6 (that's conservative but better to work at the minimum point to prove the point): £240
Boggo standard laptop for fb, work etc.: £350
Xbox Live/PS+ subscription: £30
Total: £1020

PC with 7950, AMD 8320 etc. roughly £550
Games x6 (let's say they're the same games, so still expensive but cheaper than consoles i.e. leaving out the fact that there are awesome cheap PC staples like CS:GO, TF2, League of Legends, Planetside etc.): £120
Don't need to buy a boggo laptop to cover work because you have a desktop: £0
Decent peripherals: £50
Total: £720

If you'd need a laptop regardless of having a desktop then the budget becomes a bit closer run but you've got to look at all a gaming pc offers beyond the pure gaming grunt of a console. The pc budget still has plenty of room for another monitor, speakers etc. without pushing the costs of console gaming.

Op says he wants something to compete with XBOX One price wise, yet states a budget of £680. XBOX One is what £450 or so? Surely a fairer comparison to convince your mates would be to bring the price down to equal or say £499. Harder to do then, but still doable.

Read my post above yours. The cost of gaming in either system doesn't start and end with the initial gross outlay on the hardware
