I've had a very basic pc for years alongside my continual upgrade to the most recent xbox - I had the xb1 on release day this year.

But I have been slowly getting bits together to build a much better PC.

The original idea was to build a reasonably competent pc that could play some games, built on second parts to keep the cost down.

I think the Lian Li V354 case was the start of the slippery though!

I now have a gtx480, x2 120mm fans, x2 140mm fans, just recently bought a lovely (well made and incredibly happy with it) Super Flower Platinum 1000w, and will be getting hold of another GTX480 to run over SLi.

Then I need new monitor, SSD.........

The pleasure I got from seeing the increase in 3Dmark and benchmarking scores was quite sad lol

Another convert to the PC world :)

Stupidly I have missed stuff out, although not really looking for a list of suggestion or prices (although please offer them if you want) I just thought I would put a post up - I already have the case and have a ROG Maximus Gene board.

Think I will get a CPU next and then a bigger monitor as the current 17" just wont cut it!

My advice would be to save your money and then buy the parts. Otherwise you will be kicking yourself 4 months down the road when your Mobo, CPU and Graphics card are much cheaper.

General items such as:

Case
Monitor
Keyboard
Mouse
Gaming Surfaces

never generally change price much so can be brought at any time while:

CPU
Motherboard
Graphics Card
Memory
SSD
HDD
Soundcard

Could cost for example this month £1500 but then 4 months down the line could be brought for example £1200.

Yeah very true - cant beat a bargain :)

As said though I wont be buying anything other than memory, ssd, and a cpu as have most of that lot already :)

Do you know what you'll be going for?

Think an i7 is too much of a cost jump for me with a baby on the way and lots of things demanding my cash anyway so a 3 (something) kHz i5 cpu is probably what I am considering.

Already got some nice 4gb Patriot Viper ram which I will be buying more of, as for the monitor tbh I have no idea what is good make and which is a bad one.

Still reading up on SSD's too.

I would advise a Samsung 120gb EVO for the SSD and a i5 4670k for the CPU.

Both are the best at the PRICE/Performance point.

Hadnt looked at those yet as was considering 2nd hand but at £160ish for brand new they do look very good value CPU's.

Thanks for the SSD suggestion too - its amazing how much they are dropping in price now.

Don't worry, you're not in the wrong place (unless this thread has been moved here from the build logs sub-forum). Welcome to an expensive hobby! :D

Phew thats good hear.

You arent wrong about the expensive side of things, and its only going to get worse for me - I can tell :)

If you can afford an i7, it would be a good choice, especially if you are entertaining dual GPUs. However, overclock the i5 and you'll get a good performance boost.

Which ROG board to you have?

As for SSDs, depending on the size you are after, Samsung are one of the better choices, but alternatives like Toshiba, Plextor and Intel are strong contenders/choices.

I'm not scared by some OC'ing so would be more than happy with doing that to an i5.

I have a Maximus Gene IV (1155) which isnt the most modern board but it will more than do me for a while.

It's still a superb board. I love mine and keeps my 2500k entertained at 4.5ghz.

Remember, that board is only compatible with Sandybridge & Ivybridge. Haswell (1150) will not fit!

Get yourself a 2nd hand 2700k or 3770k, overclock to 4.5-4.7 and you'll be away. You'll wish you'd done it sooner.

My only other advise would be to compare the 2 and consider that while the 2nd Gen (Sandy) chips are old, they overclock so much better than the new gen. Ivy & Haswell run hot which limits their overclocking potential.

If it was me, a 2700k @ 4.8ghz would be my aim! You'll get one for £120 ish!

Thats good to hear - thanks for taking the time to reply :)

Think getting a k series i5 is the plan at the moment ;)
