At the moment, Ive got a Pentium D 820 in my media center. Performance is fine but Its a right struggle keeping it cool, and its only gonna get worse when the weather gets hotter.

Am i right in thinking an Intel E2140 would be the best cpu for me? Will it be much cooler? or will i just waist more money... What are the watts of a D 820 compared to a E2140m anyone know?

Also speedstep doesnt seem to work on this 820 cpu, I'd like it to run at low mhz when its not doing anything, but I dont see any option for it in the bios like you do with a C2D.

Hi,

An E2140 would perform probably a touch quicker than your Pentium D 820 but yes indeed temperatures will be a lot lower. People really don't joke when they say the Intel Core based CPUs run cool. At stock speeds even in areas of low airflow you'll struggle to see this CPU push much over 50*c in the hottest of weather. I'd say it's a good move. Just make sure your motherboard supports the Core 2 Duo line of CPU's (E2140 is labelled pentium but is a Core 2 Duo, regardless).
I made the move from Athlon 64 to Core 2 Duo and until I started pushing high volts through it, it wasn't really running any hotter than the Athlon 64 3700+ was temporarily using previously.

The E2140 has a TDP of ~65W and as far as I'm aware the Pentium D is nearer 105-120W.

As for your Pentium D 820, I don't think there is any speedstep as such. Netburst CPU's with Speedstep drop down to 14x Multiplier when the CPU is idling which is infact that default multiplier of your CPU in the first place.

the 820 doesn't support speedstep...

the 2140 should work out just fine for you......or you can scout the members market for any C2D...all of them below 2.4ghz have 65w tdp I believe.

Its currently idling around 60'C  And with no speedstep like you said, its really not the greatest cpu for a media center. I've had to already turn up the case fans to compensate, its hardly ideal.

Hopefully i can still get a few quid for it and buy a E2140 for £50. My motherboard supports C2D, so it should support these too (maybe need a bios update to get the right name)

Cheers

if it idles at 60 then the HSF isnt seated properly or something....

He is talking about a Pentium D though, which is basically 2 P4s stuck together so it's not exactly gonna run cool!

my friend has a p4 d 950 (3.4ghz) and it idles 35c on the stock cooler

my e6320 sits at 26-28 idle and about 40-43 under orthos full load (a few hours in). this is at 3100mhz aswell (like almost a 70% overclock), sycthe infinity, fitted with one (soon to be two :D ) sharkoon 2000's though.

The 9xx Pentiums are different as they are Preslers, smaller core, where as the 8xx are essentially 2 prescots stuck togother.

Ive reseated the heatsink twice now, as I thought it was high. But if the heatsink wasnt on properly, it wouldnt get hot, but it does.

And this isnt a desktop case Im using, it a media center that is also in a cabinet without any airflow.

Why spend a few quid when i dont need the speed, the lower the mhz the better I feel for this box, it's so toasty.

My e2160 has been one of the best purchases ever.

£50 delivered to my door and has overclocked from 1.8ghz to 3ghz.

At stock they do run very cool and are noticeably quick!

Agreed but my dads 820 was 62 C full load on the default intel cooler, 38 C @ idle...
My own 925 @ 3.9 ghz @ 1.425 volts ( default is something like 1.2xx) is 43 idle...

Regardless, what's it idle temp, if its below 75C, you have nothing to worry about, them scotts & DC scotts can go upto 80-85 C without killing themselves, and will stay 100% stable below 75 C.
