So vermin control is only acceptable if no-one enjoys it?

Of course it is... NOt.

some people have just been brain washed into thinking that killing should not be fun or enjoyable. Well I hate to tell you we are hunters and as such we get adrenaline rush and feel good hormones from doing it.

This thread is gonna get messy heheh . But good job and love abit of ratting although like Spie we usualy have a shotgun waiting for the runners .

Persil

Not great to see as a rat lover and for someone who's not fond of dogs. But I see why it needs to be done and these are wild rats not domestic.

So it’s an excuse for blood sports (exercising the gentle dog and fun) using vermin control as an excuse.

No, it's a perfect example of effective pest/vermin control going hand in hand with field sports. Terriers are bred to hunt. It's their instinct to hunt. If they don't hunt they can become restless. A terrier that hunts regularly is an excellent dog, it remains energetic yet docile and makes a wonderful pet.

People have been doing this for hundreds of years. It's no different now compared to what it was then. Years ago not everyone had or could afford a gun so they used their dogs to control vermin. A sport evloved from it many many years ago. My dad and his Border Terrier "Tiny" won the last ever Irish championship back in the early 70's. After then the sport began to die out as many other field sports are which is a shame.

Nowadays the so called "modern thinkers" automatically daub anything that involves killing an animal as a blood sport.. Call it what you will but it is a tradition that has been around for many years and will continue to be around for many more to come.

When I used to go fishing the lakes were totally stuffed with them, all night in the bivvy you could hear them scuttling around. We started leaving chunks of dairy milk out, and blowing them away with air rifles!

lol @ blood sports. It's pest control. You're not one of those people who lights a candle and asks the vermin to please leave your space when you find one in the pantry, are you? :p

What is a pantry, something you country bumpkins have!

It’s just an excuse for you and your doggies to have some fun using pest control as an excuse for hunting.

I think you're a little confused. Horse before cart, so to speak. Why would we need an excuse  I'd hunt them anyway. If it's a pest, we hunt it to keep the numbers down. If it's not a pest, we hunt it and eat it. Simple :D

My parent's wire fox terrier has never been taught to hunt, but the one time he's been taken somewhere there was rats... It was mental, he certainly knows what to do, and there was little stopping him once he got the sent.

Very much the same as people talking about country field sports and activities is an excuse for you to get on your hippy high horse and declare something you don't understand as wrong.

Yes, it is hunting. There is nothing wrong with hunting. If our ancestors did not hunt they would have died.

Ignore the townies, leave them to their kebab shops and weatherspoons. Would they prefer poision?

Nice dogs, I've got a couple of jacks. Haven't been ratting with them but they do a good job of keeping the squirel population down and even had a fox.
