A decade of Uber?

I use my local mini cabs and black cabs in town.

I don’t even remember the last time I used a taxi. I’m a combination of not very outgoing and usually the designated driver. The odd times we go away we tend to be walking distance from where we want to go as well.

I use it all the time for nights out. Normally it would cost me £30-35 to get home in a standard taxi, but Uber is about £25

Never had any issues with it.

Rarely use stuff like this as have a car.
But odd couple of times I've used a taxi service its been uber.
Just easier to get with an app.

Some people get a paywall from mylondon so let me know if you want me to copy/paste the text on here.

Following further investigation we have fully refunded the rider in this instance."

I bet they haven't fired the driver for trying to pull a fast one and scam a customer though.

Started using it around 2013 I think. Id estimate i've probably had well over 1000 ubers during that time for work and personal life.

It's pretty much a god-tier app for me, so quick and easy, never waited more than about 5 minutes for a cab due to mainly being around London.

Never had a single bad experience with a driver in that time either.

Bolt is decent as well, a little cheaper but works the same only the wait time can be a little longer.

I guess I should feel a little bad for the old-school cabbies but their **** was horrifically overpriced and their unique selling point of knowing every road in London got overridden by this thing called GPS. It's not like i was using black cabs before Uber anyway, it was basically public transport and then that got ditched as soon as i realised how god damn easy uber was.

Uber is fine for casual use but I tried the advanced booking for my holiday trip and they failed to arrive. It was quite a panic in the early hours of the morning.

Love them or hate them, their business model and mobile app forced the taxi industry to finally get into the 21st century.

I remember in the early 00s having to phone around several taxi companies trying to get a booking and drivers just not turning up after waiting an age. Yes Uber has its problems, but being able to order a taxi via an app and track them in real time is / was ground breaking.

Only time I’ve tried to use one was to travel no more than two miles in Edinburgh after the Eagles concert at Murrayfield. Due to the number of people waiting there was ‘surge’ pricing and they wanted £30 for a ten minute journey. We got the bus instead. Their plan to essentially wipe out the standard Taxi companies, at least in the UK failed miserably. They’ve been losing millions every year and investors will soon be looking for profit. I doubt they ever will make the money expected.

I've not really used it much in the UK. Though i've used it abroad to great effect. Was in Romania for 5 months, and the local taxis kept trying to sell drugs, and offering me prostitutes! On one occasion one even tried to sell me a gun. Had the fear of being cut up by one of the local yellow-cabs, so switched to uber/bolt though atleast if i was going to get murdered by a Romainian uber driver. I would be tracked first!

Jokes aside, uber can be so cheap overseas and much quicker in response.

Similar story with Romania. I used it extensively in India as well, as the hotel taxis were just absolutely abhorrently expensive.

I was in Romania for work with a colleague 10 years or so ago. I remember the dodgy taxi drivers and their offers, but particularly one driver who, after my very drunk colleague professed his love for his car (Lada?), let him have a go and drive his taxi back to our hotel

I used Uber for the first time only a week ago. I was clubbing in Birmingham on a strike day (couldn't cancel as I already had tickets), so I used Stafford Taxi to get from Stafford to Birmingham as Uber doesn't have any drivers in Stafford. Then the Sunday was a non-strike day but was still running a skeleton timetable, so I tried Uber (as Uber will honour Birmingham to Stafford but not the other way round) and it worked a treat. There were a couple of things I wasn't aware of like needing to confirm the name of the driver when he pulled up and then tapping a button on the app to say that the "driver has arrived". The drive made it pretty clear to me though as a 1st-timer so I'll know from now onwards.

From Wolverhampton to Stafford and Cannock to Stafford, I have always used ABC Cars (also app-based). I'll see if Uber operates from Wolves/Cannock though, but if not, I'm happy to carry on using ABC Cars.

Stafford Taxi uses a form on their web site which you fill in and they confirm it by email then confirm again by WhatsApp nearer to the time. Again this works well for me.
