A decent but not to expensive upgrade required from an i5 4590

My son has currently plays on the i5, with 16 gig of RAM. (can't recall the MB)

He has an Nvidia 3060ti and is itching for an upgrade in the CPU department, which as far as I can see (to make it worthwhile) will need a new MB and RAM as well, unless there is a CPU that will drop into his current setup that wont cost a fortune and will give a decent boost in performance.

So break it to me gently, what are his best (budget) options that will really see an overall lift in performance or is his CPU still good given his screen and gaming tendencies?

He games at 1080p@144Hz, plays mainly overwatch.

You have 2 choices you could get a second hand 4770k which would see a slight improvement over your current cpu.

Or 6 core Cpu motherboard and memory upgrade which will cost you about £350.

11400f, b560 mobo 16gb ddr4 .

Does he have his games on a ssd ?

4590 still not bad. Can slap in a cheapo xeon e3 v3 which is i7 equivalent.
Personally id not upgrade yet wait till next year ir end of this year and go with new platforms which are coming out.

A pretty solid, cheap upgrade would be the thing listed below.

Intel Xeon E3-1275 V3 @3.50GHz Quad Core LGA1150 (SR14S) (Listed as a Charity item)

I would go with this, although it's a shame the 11600KF has gone up in price, a week or two back they were around £180 so worth considering.

Thanks for the response, seems a reasonable cost for a decent jump in performance. I'll look into it.
Actually really nothing reasonable in prices of Intel's outdated quad cores...
Which are basically half the CPU in new consoles.

£50 would be lot from such.
Adding HT simply doesn't make quad core more than marginally better in more modern games.
And even single core performance for old/low CPU requirement games is behind, especially with the countless vulnerability patches nibbling it.

its not a quad core cpu

the i5-11400f has 6 and is an excellent low power high performance gaming cpu without breaking the bank

faster than a ryzan 3600 for less money

Spending a net total of £35 to get 4c/8t from just 4c/4t is totally worth it, Vs buying an entire new EOL platform if you are looking for a quick cheap boost with little to no hassle or cost
