A decent diesel for £7,000??

I have a Honda warranty on mine and its only around £3-400 a year. Very comprehensive too but so far I've not had to get any work done under warranty.

A few years ago I bought a 320d for 5k, kept it 2 years and put 30k on the clock only having to fork out for break pads and new tyres aswell as the regular services, so Im sure its possible to get a good reliable one for 8k if its what you really want.

I would try and get one with no more than 70k on the clock if you can, with full BMW Service history as a must and some kind of warranty just for peace of mind.

When does the belt need doing on these or are they chain driven?

Chain driven

You'll not find the Civic any slower than a 320d, parts no more expensive either, as said mine has been good so far - they're quite different cars though.

If you really want a 320d get one under 60k and buy the bmw warranty at circa £50 / month

Agree, .. I only took a Civic 2.2d by the length of my car from 30-70ish the other week :)

Watch out for timing chain issues on the 320d once you get over 100k or so aswell.. a warranty is a must for peace of mind.

Are the E90's chain driven, that's the shape I was looking at??

I do like the Civic's but I heard they don't handle very well?

Yes e90's are chain driven

Depends what you're comparing it to really but the Civic handles tidily (ignore the omg no IRS crowd) - the trade off being it's a bit firm.

It would be a good idea for you to go and drive a few of these cars - take out say a 320d, civic 2.2, focus 2.0tdci, is220d and see what you think. If you're expecting a 320d to outshine the rest you might be a bit disappointed, then again maybe it'll tick all the boxes for you and you're happy to take a chance / pay the extra for warrantied piece of mind

Just seen that VAG did a recall on the injectors on the 2.0 TDI's.

Only on the 170s. My local Audi dealer said they changed all 4 injectors and the wiring loom. I've had a fair bit of work done to my car recently including a new loom because Audi did not change the loom. They also didn't not replace the rocker cover - the gasket usually is a one shot item so the gasket and cover should be changed every time you open up - Audi didn't. I've had to get a new rocker cover and wiring loom. Disgusted with the dealer TBH.

I haven't bothered to call Audi to complain because as the work has been done they would just they can't comment as the car has been worked on by someone else.

I think it might be out of budget but I hired an Insignia for the day and it was far better than my B7 A4. The A4 is an older generation I know but the Insignia was just all round better. If I sell the A4 I'll most likely get an Insignia.

What are the common problems with the E90 320d's??

The BMW and Audi are at the top of my list at the moment.

Pre-lci swirl flaps, turbo failure, egr and coolant thermostats, fuel breather pipe leaking
Lci timing chain, dpf over 100k, turbo failure, thermostats

You'll find most Cars have thier common faults. I can tell you one thing, try driving quickly round some country roads in an e90 and then try it in some of the less prestigious Cars. ;)

Do the E90 M Sports handle well then??

Yeah I just don't want catastrophic reliability problems. I had the Clio 3 years, put 60k on it and it never skipped a beat until 3 weeks ago when the gearbox gave up at 91k.

Yes, but they're a bit harsh for some people (I dont personally mind). At the end of the day it's rwd against 90% of the other cars talked about on this thread being fwd - there's no competition really.

Then don't buy a diesel E90 M Sport with a budget of justr £7k. This is the very bottom of the market for those.

Whats the point in picking a small diesel engine to save money on fuel only ending up having to spend it all on £300 a pair rear tyres and repair bills? Seems totally pointless.

It may be a small diesel engine Fox but I wouldn't say they are particularly slow.

The 182 was great fun to throw around and was nippy but most of the time i'm stuck behind a lorry or doing 60mph on a B road.

It's times like this, where the Clio would only do 40mpg and something like an E90 would do 50mpg +.

Oh i'm willing to spend a bit more than £7k for a BMW or Audi but only £1,500 tops.

I didn't say it was slow, I said its an engine you pick to save money. So if you want to save money why buy an older BMW? Better off with something newer and cheaper to run.

I want something prestigious that's all.

I know of the various problems the E46 diesels had and I wouldn't waste my money on them.

Are the E90's more reliable or is it simply a bad idea??

The e90 has an M47 just like the e46 does. It's fairly ambitious to expect any 7ish year old car to be ultra reliable doing large annual mileage really. If you want to save money buy something newer with a less cool badge. If you want a BMW buy a nice one and accept the fact it will need money spending on it from time to time. It's a rubbish economy minded purchase.
