Hi.
Ive been having major problems with Edgy lately, and despite Dapper being pretty bullet proof for me, im not keen on going back.

Can anyone suggest another distro in the same vain as Ubuntu?
IE; one that has a good community behind it who are willing to help without getting awkward? (as i used to notice that some of the 'generic' linux forums users were really awkward).

Thanks in advance. :)

SuSE in the form of SLED10.1's pretty nice, especially if you've a good GPU and you can crank up Xgl.

Be sure to install gcc from the DVD as, by default, it's not installed. It was giving me all sorts of headaches last week because I didn't install gcc and didn't have the disk. As far as I could tell it couldn't be forced to download a packaged binary from anywhere and in order to build my own I'd first need gcc. :p

Not overly keen on the idea of Suse for some reason? lol. :p

-Do either support any of the fancy 3d desktop stuff 'out of the box?'
-Are any of the mentioned distros viable for usage as a primary work OS? (internet, filesharing, typing, ect;?).
-What sort of packages do they both use also? For example Ubuntu uses deb files.
-How do they handle updates? For example, Ubuntu tells me when theres updates available. Does Fedora or Suse allow me to do this?

Thanks bty. :)

Ive gotta admit, ive been looking around at the two suggested, and Suse looks like it has come a long way since i last used it.
I think i'll give that a bash.
Will a 20Gb partition be enough for it? My existing Ubuntu installation lives on a 20Gb partition, with a 30Gb FAT32 storage drive.

More suggestions welcome though. :)

Im a little confused here.
Where the heck is the Suse 10.1 torrent download?
Some sites point me at opensuse, which is a different OS isnt it? And others point me at Novell, where i can only get a 60 day trial?
Am i missing something here?

SuSE proper is pay for due to some of the packages it comes with not having GPL license, if memory serves.

Go for Fedora if you want all out free and do-it-all-for-you distro, or be a man an install a real man's distro.

there are 3 versions of suse

opensuse = free
Novell suse linux = pay
Suse linux enterpize desktop = pay geared towards corperate desktops cost about £25 a year.

The iso im downloading is called:
SUSE-Linux-10.1-Remastered-DVD-i386.iso
Which one would that be?

Hows about that in English? ;)

Are you saying that Suse doesnt come with the Suse equilivent of apt-get/Synaptics?

suse comes with yast that includes a software manager, but smart is more like yum and a lot easyer / quicker to use.
