A distro that isnt Ubuntu...

I would hazard a guess that BoomAM required a simple to install system with easy to manage software installer in GUI format.

*bsd's don't really fit that requirement for a new user coming from windows. However desktop bsd would be a viable alternative to SuSe due to the way that it's been packaged up.

There would also be more support around for the likes of SuSe, Ubuntu, Fedora etc etc due to the userbase.

Hopefully i've not offend yourself or BoomAM with the above comments.

Nah.

The thing about FBSD is that it has excellent manuals. The userbase is still out there, even though as it may or may not be as big as *nix bases.

possible but to get anywhere near to the general "polish" off SuSe you would need...
What do you mean 'polish' ?

suse comes with yast that includes a software manager, but smart is more like yum and a lot easyer / quicker to use.
So all 'yum' is, is an alternative package manager of sorts, basically?

Yes. You could just add some repositories to the YOU (yast online update) module and they would fetch a list of all these rpms - but its just a longer way of doing it (I'm not a fan of you, looks overcomplicated). With smart on the other hand you can just wap on something you want and sit back whilst it solves dependencies (without asking you everytime). Minimal fuss.

Just go back to Ubuntu for goodness sake, Edgy rocks ;)

Edgy wasn't all that great for me. For startes it really broke VMWare, its not Ubuntus fault but really annoyed me.

I'll stick with Dapper for the mean time until edgy matures a bit.

So go back the the OS thats been causing me problem all week. Hmm....;)

Suse finished downloading last night, and its just installing now, although i think it might be the 'proprietary' version seeing as it asked for agree/disagree licences for flash and something else? Although, as it was a free download, i think it might just be the free version. Conflicting! :p

Does SMART replaces 'Yum' completely?
So if ive got this right, the default 'Yum' throws up dependencies errors with everything. Where as SMART is more like apt-get in that it doesnt, and gets the dependencies for me?

You get EULA's with proprietry software like flash, you'll know it's the wrong one when you get to the final stages of installation when it asks for money.

Ah.
Bit long winded the installation is.
But it is easyier to do than any other Distro ive used.

Im having problems installing the ATI Drivers though. Ive managed to CHMOD the *.run file, and run it, but after navigating through garbled screens with prompts, it finally 'installs' or so i think, then it just says 'errors occured, please see xxx.log'. So i restarted. And now its sitting at a screen with nothing but wallpaper and a cursor. Not a good showing upto now.

If you go through the ATI installer readme or guides on the SuSE WIKI you will most likely find some stuff you have to do with sax2.

The problem does appear to be with Sax2. Ive redone the install several times, i still get the error thing at the end of the ATI install, but when i run the Sax2 config thing, i get errors about being denyed access to my display device.

Have to say the manual is very good! although "most" people trying / moving over from windows would be put off by the thought of having to use a manual

I've downloaded desktop bsd to give it a try as it does look quite good.

Smart replaces using yast for software installation, yum is a Fedora / CentOS package manager, although you may be able to get it for SuSe.

HTH

Managed to get the ATI drivers working.
After some playing around i managed to nuke the video drivers completely, then got the ATI drivers on. So now the ATI stuff is on.

Gonna try and get compiz working tomorrow.

Its also very annoying that its yet another Linux distro that doesnt mount FAT32 partitions out of the box!

Im trying to get this XGL business working.
Ive installed all the relevent packages, enabled it in gnome control panel, restarted, Xserver didnt want to run, so i did the sax2 command again, restarted, it booted, and although XGL is reporting to be 'on', its quite clearly not!?

Ideas?
