A distro that isnt Ubuntu...

Well if you want somethign a bit more technical then Ubuntu, Arch Linux is a great distro. It is a bit of effort to set up, but runs a lot more smoother. I run it on my Laptop, Dell Latitude LS PIII 500Mhz Coppermine, 128MB SDRAM, 10GB IBM TravelStar, 2.5MB NeoMagic256AV.

So if you want to know Linux a bit better Arch Linux is the way to go. Like most other distro's the main source of packages is from precompiled binaries, which you use 'pacman' to get.

Otherwise NetBSD!

Its also very annoying that its yet another Linux distro that doesnt mount FAT32 partitions out of the box!

+ Noticed that suspend doesnt work when i close my laptop.

sorry I mean with fedora - it wont work (its not a distro specific thing). Also, for your mounting issue just go into Yast and slap it in.

I can get it to mount. Problem is, that i can neither create a desktop shortcut to the mount point, nor a link in the 'favourites' part of the file explorer, nor a link in 'Computer'.
All 3 of which i could do in Ubuntu!?

Have you checked in yast or /etc/fstab to see if the mount as the 'users' option. This might be stopping you from creating your own shortcut ?

Odd.
Ive just rebooted. And XGL seems to work now. Sorta.
It'll allow me to move windows with the XGl effect fine. The Cube desktop works. Rain works. Transparancy works. But resizing just causes it to go jerky!? And the fancy menu drop down effect doesnt work.

But if i go the ATI control panel, it just errors with 'Driver does not provide the FireGL X11 extensions!'. Very odd.

As for the FAT32 problem.
Ive set the YAST partitioner to allow users to mount. And theres no difference, it still wont let me create shortcuts anywhere for my mounted drive, located at /mnt/storage.

Surely if you open up a terminal, cd to your desktop then;

ln -s /mnt/storage fatdrive (edit - had it wrong way round

)

That would work?

Or even in the gui if you right click and select create shortcut?

Your command works however.

Its just puzzling that the things that were easy to do in Ubuntu, like creating shortcuts for anything, anywhere, doesnt seem to be able to be done as easyily in Suse. :confused:

Im gonna nuke Suse later tonight, give Fedora6 a bash, see what thats like.
I like some things about Suse, like some of the things that i'd need to use CLI for in Ubuntu, have GUIs in Suse. And YAST is useful. But also a few things annoy me.
So im gonna give Fedora6 a go, and if thats any better, i'll stick with that, if not, back to Suse.

PClinus OS is good as easy as Ubutnu and as easy to install , worth a look

I quite like Fedora tbh.
Im yet to find a guide to mounting FAT partitions, or to installing the ATI drivers, but upto now, i like it.

That wont perminately mount it though.
It'll still require some stuff being put into the fstab, and from experiance, its different for each distro. So i cant just use the Ubuntu commands ive got.

Can anyone point me at some good Fedora guides?

The ubuntu stuff never worked in Suse?
Regardless, are there any good guides around for Fedora. As the ones i can find are rubbish.
