Well if you want somethign a bit more technical then Ubuntu, Arch Linux is a great distro. It is a bit of effort to set up, but runs a lot more smoother. I run it on my Laptop, Dell Latitude LS PIII 500Mhz Coppermine, 128MB SDRAM, 10GB IBM TravelStar, 2.5MB NeoMagic256AV.
So if you want to know Linux a bit better Arch Linux is the way to go. Like most other distro's the main source of packages is from precompiled binaries, which you use 'pacman' to get.
