I have finally got back on the net after being kicked out my dads 4 and a bit months ago.

Just been connected for the first time to ADSL (I was with Telewesat for 3 years previously), i'm with Nildram, and on their Broadband 2 package.

Now the thing is, i'm not really liking the speed, it says max 8mb download, but at the moment i can't get even over 1mb download speeds, is ADSL this bad?

If this is the case i aint paying £26 a month for something which is so rubbish as i may aswell go back on dial up it's that bad. (Sorry i'm a bit sad and dissapointed at this)

Will the speed increase? (It was activated yesterday)

.EDIT. Forgot to mention, i'm using a Belkin ADSL Modem Router, i know it aint great, but it seems easy to use and i will get a better one when i sell my old routers i used for the cable internet.

Fubs.

You need to go into your router config page, and find the Connection speed down and up, and the Attenuation and SNR for us to help :)

Type - Fast
Status - No Defect

Downstream Upstream

Data rate 1984 448

Pasted from my router homepage.

60db Attenuation means you have a very long, or poor quality telephone line from your house to the exchange.

This results in your low downstream data rate of 1984, and means that BT's system will provide you with a maximum of 1.5mb datarate. If you happened to sync at 2272 or higher, you would then get 2mbit data throughput, subject to contention obviously.

There is nothing you can do im afraid, maybe try connecting your router into your mastersocket might get you to 2mbit, or 2.5mbit, but it all depends on the quality of your home wiring.

NTL or Telewest would be a far superiour option for you, (if its available in your area), as the connection speeds advertised are what you are guarnteed to get. Obviously they are subject to contention too.

For you to get a faster connectino from BT, its going to require then digging up the UK to put fibre optic cable closer to your house. The estimated cost for this nationwide is £25 Billion. This may happen in 10-20 years+. Sooner if the govervment helps pay torwards it.

Yea thats what i thought, i would have gone with Telewest or NTL if it was available, alas it is not :(

I im connected directly to the main phone line as i wired it up myself early last week as the existing telephone cable was awful.

Sorry to hijack, but i'm having a similar problem - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17597928

Dave, could you take a look at my stats and see if you can spot a problem?

Modulation: Multi-mode
Annex Mode: ANNEX_A
Max Tx Power: -38 dBm/Hz

Item / Downstream / Upstream / Unit
SNR Margin / 6 / 23 / dB
Line Attenuation / 34 / 38 / dB
Data Rate / 7040 / 448 / kbps

Thanks!
