Looking to get a new cpu/motherboard upgrade for my sons pc and would like some opinions on what cpu/motherboard to get it's for 1080p gaming.

He is currently on phenom 960t, 7950, 550w psu, 8gb ddr3,cm sniper case.

looking round and the haswell i5 4440 seems like it would be the best all round processor for him? opinions?

I don't really want to overclock the processor or change the cooler etc.

I'm hoping to use the same ram in the new build it's 4x 2gb sticks kingston hyper x 1600 (They only seem to run at 1333).

So I was thinking the 4440 haswell i5 with a MSI H87-G43 Intel H87 motherboard?

Thanks

4440 is a decent choice.

you might get the MSI B85 G43 board too, should be even cheaper and just as good.

what cooler is he using atm? for the RAM you should enable XMP profile to run at 1600MHz.

Ok thanks the b85 it is then.

The cooler on the phenom is a artic freezer 7 I think, I was just going to use the stock 4440 cooler if it worked well enough.

Freezer 7 should be bit quieter under load.

The reason I wasn't planning on using the freezer 7 is that the ram has really tall heatsinks and it makes fitting it a problem.

I had to butcher the freezer 7 quite a bit to get it in and the fan is held on with cable tie.

I thought I would just stick with the stock one.

You can barely hear the Intel heatsink at all really, if it's running at stock, just use it.

I've been very impressed with them ever since I used them back with the 1155 chips.
But that's just testament to Intels heat output rather than the cooler, as it looks pitiful.

I have just been told by a friend that I will need new psu for Haswell?

Will I be able to use one of my existing psus? I have a spare xfx 550w core edition here if that will work but it doesn't say haswell compatible.

Can I just turn off the power saving mode in the msi motherboard?

you don't need new PSU for Haswell. use one that you already have.

the whole compatibility thing is about a certain powersaving state that in the worst case you can just disable in BIOS/UEFI.

Do you think I can definitely disable it on the msi b85 motherboard?

I'm planning to order tonight.
