Yes, I'm eating my words, but after trialling a few different devices for our chief exec, it appears the best device for him is an iPhone. He wanted something as simple to use as possible with a good internet experience - the HTC Hero came close but for sheer ease of use the iPhone won....

I can't see us rolling out any more though - will be sticking with Nokias for everyone else!

Few quick questions though -

- We're already using ActiveSync on 2007 through ISA 2006 with a GoDaddy cert. It's happy as larry on Nokias, WinMo and Android - I presume it will be fine on the iPhone?
- Activation, do I need to activate it with his SIM in it or can I do it with any SIM and drop his in later?
- I've ordered a PAYG iPhone 3G 8gb, we have an O2 contract - I assume I can drop his SIM into it without issue? Obviously I wont instantly get the free data but he has 3gb on there anyway and shared minutes on the contract.
- The cloud wifi thats free for iPhone users, do you need to be on an iPhone tarrif or is it based on device?
- What's best practice in terms of corporate encryption/security and what do I need to set it up?

Anything else I should know about setting it up in this sort of environment?

Thanks all!

Newer versions of the iphone have no problems with activesync (older ones had zero support and was a real pain in the ass).
With our newer iphone it had to be activated via itunes (!)

I'm still interested to see how these do in a corporate setup as they stand.

They are crying out for some kind of security and management tools!

This I feel is the one big down fall of the iPhone, it’s not very secure. Management tools are ok, but they are not as good as Blackberry.

Looks to me like you have all the points covered. :)

One question, How come you didn’t take a look at the Blackberry / BES Server combo. If I was planning a new mobile data solution I would choose a Blackberry solution over an Active Sync.

Excatly, we have a ton of BB's all with no problems, the only reason I am looking at the iPhone is that they are cheaper to run than the Blackberrys!

We've only got a few BBs (about 175) but the system just works really well :)

You can also run a BES server for a single device for free if you wanted :p

You'd have to pay for the blackberry tariff with your mobile provider.

I cant see CESG reviewing the iPhone security unless they even attempt to put proper managment in place so we went be using them for a while.

Also, as far as I know, they dont support PGP which BB and Windows Mobile do. Im sure PGP would make a program for it though if enough business wanted to use them.

Personally I prefer Blackberrys anyway (Im a bit of a RIM fanboy)

Yup naturally you have to pay for the BB etc, but the server license for a single device if free.

And we're exactly the same, CESG approval means we'll be sticking to BB for now.
