Hi,

I decided to take a walk this morning and took my trusty Canon A610 along with me. I just took a few snaps of things i thought looked interesting, what do you think?.

These 2 are blades of grass with frost on them.

Cheers, ye it was fairly cold last night but the sun was shining when i went out and it felt quite warm. The frost is just the normal white layer you get on grass but i had the lens about 2cm away from it, it seems to have a good macro for a compact camera. I thought i had a good shot of the sun behind some trees casting long shadows but the sun has a big purple glow to one side that ruins it :( , i hope its a nice day tomorrow so i can take the tripod and try and re take it.

A quick question, how do you stop the sun glare?, i took a pic of the sun peering through some trees and its ruined by a red/pink glare off the sun. Is there a filter i could use or is it just the angle i took it at?. Im pretty pleased with my first attempt, before this ive just taken pics of my pc etc. I might even get an DSLR in the summer :) .

Very nice, I like them. But seeing as you asked what we think I have a couple of comments (sorry, I'm in one of those moods :o )...

First one is nearly there but the focus looks a smidge off. Also the difference between the snowy foreground in the bottom half and the darker trees at the top chops the shot in two which is usually best avoided and in this case I think so. A slightly lower point of view looking up to the frosted grass against the darker background of the sky and trees would have worked better as it would have made the frost stand out more.

Second one, much better. Even against the light background it works as the frost is nicely in focus and the background is oof with the shallow dof you used. I would crop or clone out the bottom bit of frost creeping in just in the bottom of the frame as it can draw the eye away from the subject. Maybe a really narrow crop on it too might work a little better. Still a nice shot as it is though.

The last one doesen't do a great deal for me. The path leads the eye but it's too central IMO. Perhaps you could try it at a bit of an angle with the path starting bottom left leading off to the top right along the diagonal. It's worth experimenting but think about the rule of thirds when taking your photos and it may help your composition.

Good shots anyway...keep them coming. :)

Thanks for the comments, ill take them on board :) , Im just limited as to what i can do with this camera regarding dof etc. Ill have to get a DSLR at some point, i just wanted to get a cheaper camera first to see if photography was for me and i think it is :) . Is it the F numbers that change the DOF?, mine only goes from F2.8 - F8 and i think i used f8 and macro mode for them shots.

I'm quite surprised at how shallow the DOF is on your camera is if that's at F8. I think I read somewhere that the equvalent DOF on 35mm film translates to about F63 or something ridiculous when converted. I think maybe it's too long since I used one and I've forgotten that they're acually quite good and getting better.

In answer to your question yes the F numbers do change the DOF. The lower number (or wider aperture) makes the DOF smaller. So F2.8 will give you the smallest DOF (and the fastest shutter speed) while F8 will give you a much larger DOF.
