A few questions on phone contracts

Hello all, I'm just coming to the end of my first mobile contract with Orange. I'm looking to get either a Desire HD or waiting for the new Android phones that are expected early next year. The thing is I have a few probably easily answered questions on contracts.

1. I'm currently on Orange but would like to move to T-Mobile, afaik I have to ring up and get a PAC code, then I give that to T-Mobile when I order and that lets me get my number moved over. Is there any particular time frame to getting this PAC code? Do I have to wait until the last month of the contract?

2. What happens at the end of a contract? Do you go onto some sort of monthly rolling contract or do you have to sign up again for another set period? If I do end up deciding to wait for the upcoming phones then I'll need something in between to use.

Thank you :)

I'm just going through a Orange > T-Mobile number transfer with a couple of months left on my contract.

In short, I got a Desire Z on T-Mobile as new contract, contacted Orange for my PAC code which was sent via post in 2 working days. You can then call T-Mobile and give them the PAC code, it normally takes 2-3 working days for the transfer and your old sim will go dead.

Once the numbers been ported Orange close your account and charge you for the remainder of your contract and any other outstanding fees.

My number gets ported tomorrow sometime, so will post back on my experience.

On a side note, dont sign up for any online billing etc, just use your old sim card until it goes dead. Once its transferred then change any settings, contact T-Mobile if theres any issues and sign up for online billing to your (now) T-Mobile number.

If you look on mobiles.co.uk amongst other sites, T-Mobile still do slightly better deals imo. I think the 'Everything Everywhere' (sic) brand will kick in some time though, then they will truly be one network.

Ok my number port went through yesterday just after lunch, tested by ringing my number and its been ported correctly. Logged into T-Mobile and entered all my details for online billing etc, so far so good. Just awaiting my final bill from Orange so I can get them paid off.

TBH its been nice and refreshing to see something like this go smoothly :)
