I moved over to sky regular BB in July from Virgin Media, I know it sounds like a big downgrade but i lived in a high utilised area (5MB speeds at prime time) and fttc is not too far away.

I am currently using a Dlink 880 1900AC router with the sky router as a modem, trouble is the dlink has **** firmware and constantly gets its settings corrupted if you tinker with any of the settings.

can anyone recomend a good DSL router to replace my sky and dlink one

Same boat here, still looking for a working one. Avoid TP-LINK ones as I have tried 2 different ones (a TD-W8969 model last week)and they will only work at ADSL speeds (8Mbps) and fail to connect properly for ADSL2+ to get any higher. On other forums I have seen Billion and Netgear ones used OK but have not seen yet a specific current model recommended.

The Billion 8800 AXL is a solid router. Some people complain about wireless range on it, I never had any issues. It supports Sky's MER out of the box (I'm sure you're aware that it's against T&C's to use anything other than Sky's router, but there are ways around it - just keep your Sky router in case you have other network issues).

The only reason I replaced my Billion was because I wanted the VPN and user management features that Draytek offer.

Sky does not use MER now (now uses pppoa but not certain if this is for fibre as well) and since the O2 acquisition Sky have changed their T&Cs to allow 3rd party routers for their ADSL broadband ( but not fibre).

To be honest, with Skys moaning about using their routers, I said right from the off, that I have no intention of using their router, as I have just paid a small fortune for mine.

They said it was fine. They only have issues because if people phone up, they need to know the routers and so thats why they want their own. No other reason, but for the help desk really, so keep theirs handy just in case.

Now, to be fair, their router isnt all that bad actually.

I have gone with an Asus DSL-N55U and I know its not the best, but its the best I could get at the time with the options available and I sort of like it... Escept its useless wireless capabilities, it does allow me to control when the kids devices have access, so thats a great thing for me.

Was there any reason why Sky started using MER, other than to be irritating?

Like are there any advantages on a technical level at all?

It's purely to stop the average user from using their own equipment.

Technically it's not MER, it's just DHCP options 60 & 61 when the router asks for a WAN IP address.

Billion 7800DXL was solid as a rock for me on ADSL sky.

Only sold it due to moving to Fibre. However you can get the TD-W9980 TP Link which supports ADSL and also Sky fibre with a firmware upgrade so that's a good option longer term if you will be upgrading to fibre. (currently using one myself)

How's the TD-W9980 TP Link for wifi coverage? Could it do entire upper floor, with thick concrete walls in between?
Any other good routers under £100 all in one, w modem, to replace sky router on fibre?

it's fine in a 4 bedroom detached house - covers everything from sonos at one end, to xbox at the other side and upper floor. Nothing I can see that I would fault it for.

What issues are you getting with it? I agree in the beginning the firmware updates were a bit slow but I reported an issue with the DHCP reservations and it got fixed pretty much within a week or two (and I got sent a beta firmware to test).

Apart from that mine's been spot on. What firmware version are you on?
