Im fairly clueless about stuff like this despite having used computers for many years.

Basically i have been handed a computer thats a couple of years old. It was just going to be binned as it was being upgraded - very silly. Theres really nothing wrong with it hardware wise (AFAIK) but it has lacked attention on the OS side of things. It would make an ideal media centre i think so im going to give it a go.

The problems seem to surround it running very slowly and struggling to do tasks that should be easy given the spec.

I have a couple of options i think -

I could run various defreg and anti virus software and try and drill down into the heart of the computers issues

or

Do a complete windows reinstall.

There is nothing file-wise or in terms of programs/applications that i want to keep so im quite happy to do the intstall, however i would be wary of losing driver software and things that would actually be needed in order for the computer to function.

Obviously i know i can google this but i was wondering if anyone had any links to good (noob-proof) step by step guides to either of my options or have any opinion on what i should do? I looking for the easiest way out really!!!

Many thanks!

Find the drivers and then do a re-install. Shouldn't be hard to find the drivers - especially if it's a DELL system or similar where you can just go online and tell them what you have and they list all the drivers.

Personally I'd do the obtaining of the drivers before re-installing.
