They don't really chase people, they usually either get canoeists ot they accidentally kill people who come between them and the water when they are grazing on land at night.

I was fishing on the Zambezi last year when one the the party thought they'd hooked something big; a hippo came up about 20' away with the hook in it's ear! We cut the line and started the engine, quick sharp.

In the evening if you looked out the lodge they were all over the place, in between tents and buildings just munching away. You had to make sure you kept to the land side of them and mke sure they heard you coming.
