I've been out of the hardware game for a while (My PC still runs a Q6600!) but I am looking to build a HTPC having decided not to get a Mac Mini.

I've read the other 2-page thread and that alerted me to the existence of the AMD Fusion boards.

I took a look at the E45M1-M PRO which looks really good. So if that seems a good choice it seems all I'll need for this HTPC is RAM and a case. (I have a Corsair 620W PSU spare).

So the main aim of this post is just to check whether I am on the right track with the above and also to recommend me a case, which I'd like to be small as possible but also sleek (and reasonably priced; say below £60).

[Edit: Have also been looking at the ASUS E35M1-I DELUXE ITX with a Lian-Li Q07 case - what are peoples' opinions on this?]

I'm in a remarkably similar situation to you (even the Q6600!) so I'll be interested to hear some of the answers here. :)

I built the following:

ASRock E350
1x4gb stick or ram
Antec ISK100 case with built in 90w psu
250 2.5" hdd

Runs winodws 7 and xbmc perfectly. Case has no dvd drive though, but I use it for streaming via my nas or last resort from usb stick

I have the Asus e35m1-I deluxe.
Fitted in a Silverstone ml03 with 8gb ddr3 and a slim bluray drive. Totally fanless except for psu which will be swapped out for a pico psi sometime.
Plays everything I have thrown at it to date on 1080p pj

I've been doing lots of reading about this today and so far I think I'm looking at the following:

Lian-Li Q07
ASUS E35M1-I DELUXE ITX (can't seem to find any benefits of the E45M - are there many?)
1 x 2.5" HDD for OS
1 x 3.5" HDD for storage
2 x 2Gb of some RAM
Corsair 520W (I have spare)
5.25" DVD Drive (I have spare)

Will I be ok with removing the fans and still be ok temp wise? (I don't plan to OC at all).

Doesn't the E45 Dlx have USB3 and the 6320 graphics card? Looking at this as a possible solution for a HTPC that can game to some extent too. Wondering how long until the 7 series will show up.

I was looking at pairing it with an Antec 300-150 case and 8GB of ram. I am wanting an always on system so would like to know if there is any merit in using an SSD rather than a mech drive from a heat generation point of view? If I went with a 2.5" HDD would that be fine?

I find 2.5" drive to be slow and clunky. They tend to make more noise as well.
If you can find a small SSD, maybe even 2nd hand if you don't want to spend out then it would be worth it.
My htpcs all use SSDs and they never get turned off (except in thunderstorms etc) but they do all use sleep mode for power saving.

the E45 has a slight increase in the graphics core i think it was like 200MHz or something. It won't blow your mind in the slightest. If its only used for media then you won't be needing the 8GB of RAM either!

It will probably be a while before the 7series APUs come out, I can't find them on the AMD release line yet :(
