A Huge Financial Gamble For My Dream Job, What Would You Do?

Blinkz also has his commercial pilots licence doesn't he? If he sees this thread he might have some useful input too.

From my utterly uneducated viewpoint it seems like an attractive option to sign up with someone who promises to get you through the necessary paperwork/exams/hours logged/licences etc but you'd have to ask yourself what are the chances that it will go as smoothly as they promise? They're asking for a hefty chunk of money whichever way you look at it and not promising a job at the end of it - 90% success rate? My cynical streak asks what qualifies for the 90%, is it only a segment where they were contracted to an airline before they started, is it from all those who started, is it just all those who qualified or...?

Ultimately the choice has to be yours regardless of what anyone else says as it is you who would be signing up to it but if it were me I'd be looking at it very closely indeed before tying myself to something like this and definitely checking what other options were. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

I wouldn't be too happy about £75,000 worth of debt without a job secure at the end of it.

I'd want a job at the end of it even if it wasn't my dream job to start with.

As you're only 17 if you actually work out how much you'll receive from a gross salary you'll be surprised how much you actually get after Tax, N.I, Pension and other outgoings. Let alone having £7,500 pinched from it each year.

if its your dream career, THEN DO IT.

This is a pretty major factor regardless of anything else. I'm actually going back to school as mentioned above to become a doctor. I really don't need to do this financially, I could retire right now if I wanted to but I'd be bored. Instead I'm putting a huge amount of money into medical school so that I can end up in a long term fulfilling and challenging career. For me personally flying didn't offer that, it was fun but I got tired of not being promoted on my ability, rather being promoted on how many hours you had.

Follow your dream, just do it with your eyes open.

Not wanting to be nosy, but is the 75k coming from your parents? i.e; no loan?

Not sure if anyone would loan 75k out to a 17 year old, (or even 18,19) if they were on a basic 20k job even?

i.e; ctc you need the cash in the first place no way to borrow it

Dream job is also a pilot but no way to obtain a loan of that amount, and am doing aero engineering now!

If I had the chance to do what I loved for a living I would be straight there.

Dude, you really have to do this or you will regret it for the rest of your life (whilst you work in a call centre)

If you were 37, I'd say no, but you're 17 and it's clearly something you want to do.

Don't look back.

At 16 I had a scholarship to become a pilot on the RAF, I WOULD have been flying.

I fell in love, and that made me give it up. I am 30 this year and it is still my one biggest regret despite marrying the girl :)

It's always better to regret doing something and it not working out, than to regret not even trying!
