Hello,

My friends getting a job which will involve him using AutoCad and he was wanting to do some work at home. This means he will need a laptop to do this.

Can anyone recommend a decent laptop for AutoCad? It has to be cheap. Dont have a set budget but the cheapest possible laptop for AutoCad would be required.

Thanks in advance!

autocad and cheap don't exist in the same sentence, you can buy a couple of laptops for the price of an autocad license

An AutoCad licence is expensive, but I am sure his work is paying for it. but you don't want to go "as cheap as possible" as it's going to struggle if your mate decides to create larger drawings.

What scale of stuff will he be drawing up? IMO if he just wants to do it at home, you're better spending the money on a small desktop to get it done. You will get way more for your money.

Without knowing the scale of the work, look for something that has an i5 inside it, 850M GPU or something similar along with a 1080p screen... you do not want to be doing CAD work on 720p.

You get a home use activation for every Autodesk product license so I'm sure he won't be paying for the software.

With regards to laptop, any old crap will do it really depends on how much he cares about quality. I've seen people run Inventor on i3's with no graphics card. Pretty shoddy but it still works.

However, AutoCAD can be a chug like a beast if hardware acceleration is turned on (on by default) but there is no need to have it on if he is only doing 2D. If he is doing 3D (why?) then I can't comment because I do not know anyone who does when there are better products for that job.

I have had it running on a 4 year old amd consumer laptop without any worries.

Hi Prooooob

Have a look at our range of mobile Workstation which are fully tested and certified by AutoCAD to run their software. The main difference on these notebooks is that they feature Nvidia Quadro Graphics rather than GT/GTX.

Any questions on these, more than happy to help

You don't really need to spend more than £500-£600 for a laptop thats going to be using autocad... unless your going to be working with giant, million line buildings.. (but then you should be using a 3D program for that BIM).

Sure the laptops that OCuk have for workstation stuff are nice and powerful, but totally wasted power for something like AutoCad.

Okay guys thanks for all the information and ideas! :) I'm knew to AutoCad and dont know what it requires in order to help him get the right thing! I'll pitch your ideas to him and tell him he'll need a wayyyy bigger budget to get the damn thing running!

Once again, thanks for the info.

You do not need a £1,700 laptop for AutoCad, thats for sure. You can spend £400-600 and it will get the job done nicely (unless its 3D stuff you are working with, but then he should be using something else entirely).

Let him know that he could ask work to buy it for him though, and him pay the amount minus VAT, might make his money stretch a little further.
