A large problem with the England team

I've just read that Jesse Lingard has been called up to the England squad. This is a player who has now played a total of five times for his club.

It is unfortunately a regular occurrence, we end up with England managers selecting players based on their club rather than their own ability. Time and time again we see players called up based on the back of a handful of games for Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal etc.

I think it is quite telling to see the amount of players who have been capped while at Man Utd only to never get close to selection when they move on. Surely it is high time we started seeing the best players selected, regardless of what club they play for?

Does the national team have a scouting network or is it primarily the manager who chooses the squad? it does seem as though we largely limit ourselves to players in the big brand clubs.

Of course it's going to be desperate when the quality just isn't there ;)

I mean how Delph gets a start is also baffling, only played 3 club games this season.. then again we have players like Wilshere who keep getting injured and Henderson who could be a key player.

I'd definitely have Redmond in instead, albrighton and Zaha can feel hard done to also.

I'm obviously biased but how shawcross' only involvement in the England team is a 15 minute run out is criminal. The sooner hodgson goes the better, i can't believe how he came out of last years World Cup unscathed.

How would they know if he was good enough or not, they didn't play him. Fergie thought he was worth £15m, Moyes didn't think he was worth trying out.

They watched him in training, they played him in the reserves and they sent him out on loan. Again Lingard had all this and was deemed good enough.

Are you seriously suggesting that there is any sort of equivalence between playing in the reserves and playing in competitive fixtures in the league?

Lingard has done nothing to merit a call up to the England squad - apart from play for Man Utd it seems.

Play well for United, something Zaha never managed.

And of course this is a friendly, isn't the whole point to try out new players? It just sounds like the usual anti large club nonsense.

The largest problem with the England team is the manager.

So what you are saying is Zaha might be playing well for Palace but he didn't play well for Man Utd? How on earth can that be "anti large club nonsense"?

I'm not disputing that playing well for Man Utd is a reason for a call up - just not after five games. A friendly is an opportunity to give a chance to blood new players, that have earned a chance by playing well for their club.

There is nearly always outcry when a youngster at a big club gets picked for the national team. It was the same with Welbeck.

Why does it matter how many games he's played? Surely all that matter is the manager thinks he's ready. If he's ready to play in the Champions League then I think he's ready to step down and play for England.

He's played 193 minutes in the premier league and not exactly set the world on fire. How on earth does that deserve a call up. Chambers, moves to Arsenal gets a call up, it's ridiculous. Doesn't matter if he didn't earn a call up at his original club, put in the squad purely because he plays for Arsenal. I'm of the opinion that only people who have played consistently well for their clubs for an extended period of time should get a call up which means that people like Townsend, Dier, Ali from Spurs and plenty from Liverpool and the other big clubs over the years should not just walk in to the national squad.

The biggest problem with the England team is that the individual players aren't that good. Plus a manager that proved he was out of his depth at Liverpool so I'm not sure how it got the job in the first place.

Lingard should be nowhere near the squad, and nor should Mason, Dier, Dele Alli, etc. Clearly the reason that Lingard shouldn't be near the squad is nothing against big clubs because I've also named players from Spurs :D

We have more experienced, match-fit players right now that are fit, available and in decent recent form. Deeney, Zaha, Drinkwater, Ward-Prowse, Albrighton, Redmond...

Talksport are running a poll on this.

63% think Zaha should have been called up
18% for Lingard
14% for Redmond

Piece on Sky News (with some stats) as well

Lingard has just broken into the Manchester United first-team and has played just 169 minutes of Premier League football this season, with one goal and two chances created.

In contrast, the likes of Leicester's Marc Albrighton (911 minutes, one goal, 22 chances created), Norwich's Nathan Redmond (765 minutes, four goals, 24 chances created) and Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha (747 minutes, one goal, 14 chances created), have been key performers for their clubs since the start of the season.
