A little help choosing a Motherboard please (for 9800X3D)

For anyone interested, I purchased the Asus Prime X870-P Wifi. HOWEVER...

It got delivered and due to boring nonsense I did nothing with it for 3 days. I then watched several more reviews on in (in particular about PCIe lane sharing) and had major second thoughts.

I found the MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk Wifi for 20 quid more elsewhere and snapped it up. Returned the Asus unopened. Much better lane sharing principles, better Wifi and better LAN. And it looks nicer so thats worth another 1 FPS. Im much happier with this decision.
Are there any comprehensive guides or videos that has all the lane sharing info in one table or something?

@jonneymendoza

This is also good to reference.

Don't be put off by going 600 series if see a good deal on one. As X870E is X670E with compulsory USB4. X870 is B650E with compulsory USB4.
Thanks. Looks like the asrock nova is the only 870e board that does not share any PCI lanes but the IO ports are a bit lacklust and doesnt seem to have much if any sata ports fro 3.5/2.5 hdd's

Another thing to note is this.

Does the 5090 get bottlenecked if running at pci 5 8x only?

Does thje latest and fastest nvme m/2 drive also perform worse on a pci 5/4 at 4x?

If the answer is no to both, is PCI lane sharing a actual negetive thing for real world use if you was to add the fastes gpu, fastest m.2 nvme on all slots plus add say a SATA pci e card or/and a 10gbit NIC pci card plus a few 2.5/3/5 hdd/ssd ?

Just jumping on this thread to ask a related question.

All my past motherboards have been from ASUS. After going through their catalogue, I'm leaning toward the ASUS ROG Strix X870E E.

However, after watching the YouTube video posted here, the MSI MPG X870E CARBON is quite similar so I'm stuck between the two. Aesthetically, it looks better but I'm not familiar with MSI.

My question is whether there is good reason to jump ship? ASUS to MSI.

Many thanks.

Why are you shopping based on brand and looks?

All of the manufacturers make good and bad models of motherboards, Asus included.

Basing your choice in a bias towards a manufacturer is a bad method of selection.

Read reviews. Watch Buildzoid videos. Do your research. Motherboard selection should be based on what your needs are so a vague opinion is useless.

Do you only game? Do you do database developement? Do you have a tight budget?

I'd suggest starting a seperate thread with those questions answered.

Literally a few posts above there is a spreadsheet where you can filter it out based on needs . @orange_smurf Please check it out as it will easily make your buying decisions straght forward

Owch! After doing my research (videos, sites, forums and the spreadsheet in this thread), I've narrowed it down to these two. They both meet my requirements, so my query is (was), which of the two motherboards is the best for a 9800x3D build, or is there not much in it (with no bias towards a manufacturer)? Also, several YouTubers, including GN, have raised concerns about QA at ASUS, but on balance, there is a consensus that MSI is slow to update the BIOS and address bugs. Aesthetically, I like the MSI motherboard, but that doesn't mean it's the "better" of the two, right? - other than ASUS "tax", I might have missed something.

In hindsight, I should have created a separate thread, but it doesn't matter; I've decided.

If they are exactly the same then just toss a coin.

Honestly I been using Asus for years and not had any issues. There is nothing wrong with there quality control. It's there customer service that is bad apparently.

And if that's the case. Just order from the forest or another tech shop that has good customer service

I don’t know. You’d need to decide as it’s for you.

I’ve always liked the MSI BIOS layout as it’s the most logical but that doesn’t mean I’ll discount any other motherboard manufacturer as long as that board has a good review.

I like to listen to Buildzoid ramble on about motherboards as he will give you options for budget, midrange do-it-all and high end boards. He will often call out motherboards for being a waste of money or excellent value.

I'd go MSI personally. I have alway been a bit of a fan of ASUS boards (have had many of them) but my last couple have been MSI and if im honest they have been just as reliable etc. I would just go with which ever ticks the boxes you want.

FWIW, my MSI MAG 870 Wireless has (touch wood) to date been flawless. The new BIOS layout is great.

Now i am aware that some early adopters seemed to get issues with some of the BIOS releases and RAM sticks. But i made sure I got a well recognised RAM brand and its worked perfectly. I was about to upgrade to the very latest BIOS, but checked forums first and there seem to be issues with it so Ill stick to the second latest which for me is very stable so far.

Thanks @Middenacht. The MAG looks good, but I went for the Asus ROG Strix X870E-E GAMING WIFI. I'm also tracking BIOS updates :)

Next on the list is a new GPU. £££
I got that board too. And then sent it back unopened when I chanced upon some reviews of it, which included how poor the PCIE lane sharing is on it. Im running a 4tb Samsung 990 nvme for games/data and a 1tb Corsair nvme for OS and i wanted hassle free PCIE sharing without impacting the GFX lanes and also not buggering up the type C port speeds at the back of the PC.

I settled for one of the last gigabyte 4080s just before everything started going mad for the 50 series launch. that will do me fine and ill pick up a 5090 next year (if the pricing comes down - which it probably wont and if the 12vHPR issue is resolved cos I dont need comedy flames inside my PC thankyouverymuchnvidia
