A little help for a moron please?

Morning!

So I have a reply from EVGA but as far as I can tell its total nonsense

For the problem you described, first ensure that you have uninstalled the previous drivers using a software tool (like CCleaner or DDU) before installing the latest drivers. This is strongly recommended as sometimes old entries in the Windows Registry can leave it unstable for use afterwards.

If you are running Windows 10, the problem might be caused by the Automatic Updates removing the Nvidia drivers (many customers have reported this lately.) Included below are steps to correct this:

To disable the Windows driver updates, go to Control Panel > System and Security > System > go under “Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings” you'll find "Change settings" to the right, go to hardware and choose Device Installation Settings, mark the option: "No, let me choose what to do" and then press Never install driver software from Windows Update.

This should allow either updating the Nvidia driver manually or through the GeForce Experience. Once the latest Windows 10 Nvidia drivers are installed, they should be good to go.

If the problem still remains after correcting these issues, please let us know so we can assist further.

How can it possibly be a driver issue when it happened before Windows was even installed, and the machine isn't POSTing with the cards installed? I can't install nvidia experience because I can only get into Windows with either the cards disconnected or disabled at which point the Nvidia software just tells me "no compatible hardware installed".

Have I lost the plot or is this response completely wide of the mark?

I would be inclined to agree with you that either one or both of the cards are faulty.
as vince has said the cards should work to a degree without any drivers being installed.

the fact it wont post when the cards arent installed would tell me theres a problem hence my earlier post of trying a single card.

out of interest did you test the cards prior to stripping the standard cooler off of them and building the loop?

EDIT just looked at spec.. they are bought with the water block on them!! forget what I said about fans and testing prior to putting the blocks on them..

Well despite not understanding how it can possibly be a driver issue if the machine won't even POST with the cards installed I have done the following but the problem remains.

- I unplugged both cards in order to be able to POST and get into BIOS.

- In the BIOS I selected IGPU

- Re-inserted the cards and now of course I can boot into windows albeit off the igpu.

So at that point I found the cards in device manager, uninstalled them and ran CCcleaner on the registry. I then downloaded the latest drivers and installed them, and restarted the PC.

So then with the BIOS set back to auto rather than IGPU we are back to the start - can't POST with the cards inserted. Pulled the cards again, selected IGPU again, and when back in windows I can see in device manager that the latest drivers are installed but as before there is the message "windows has stopped this device because it reported a problem (code 43)" on both cards.

Is that message indicative of a problem, or is it just because they are disabled in the bios by selecting IGPU?

it cant be a driver issue. if it was a driver issue it would still post and at least try to boot up into windows. even if it was a W10 issue you would still get post and again it should try to load windows then it would give you an error or crash.

I know it will involve a bit of work but do you have another card you could try in the motherboard? it could either be a bad board or 1 or both gfx cards are bad. I wouldnt like to think both are bad though..

unfortunately no, I dot have any other hardware really with which to test. I've tried each card on its own though - I have tried with the bottom card disconnected and the top card in slot 1, and I have also tried with the top card disconnected and the bottom card in slot 2.

Seems to me the chances of both cards being fubar is highly unlikely?

I would be in agreement with you. it is highly unlikely that both cards would be fubar. out of interest where abouts are you? just if youre local I have a known good gfx we could try in youre board.

Just to add - my thermaltake dr power II PSU tester arrived and I've tested all the cables, including the stock and my modded ones. No errors found on any of them... At least I can rest easy knowing the cards haven't been nuked by my wiring.

Not that it makes much difference at the moment of course, either way it's not working!

Unfortunately about as non local as it gets - I'm near Horsham (close to Gatwick)

Cheers though
yea sadly a bit far away..

at least it gives you peice of mind that its not been a problem you have caused

Just for closure and in case it helps anyone else avoid my frustration if they search for similar issues....

It was the GPU BIOS that was at fault.

I had to file an RMA with EVGA, that put me through to a chap called Markus who sent me updated BIOS files for the 980Ti's... With the cards removed I had to manually select IGPU in the UEFI and then boot with the cards inserted but using the IGPU to get into windows. From there you can use NVflash to update the GPU BIOS.

Now they both work... nice to know it wasn't me!
