A little help with a build..

Is there any specific reason for going 64bit? for home use and compatibility reasons i'd stick to 32bit vista. I ran the beta 2 of 64bit for around 6 months but it just wasnt ticking all the boxes to warrant a full version.

Just to address the 4GB of RAM, and some of the applications i run will benefit from 64bit architecture. (some not all though) So thats why i'm leaning towards a dual boot to cover uncompatible software. I'm a developer and sometimes i work from home, so its an all round rig to do personal stuff as well as the work that pays the bills!

Any Sound card? System like that, silly not to get a decent sound card !!!

The Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer 7.1 would complement your rig nicely i thinks...

Ah Sound! Is onboard any better these days? My last card was an audigy, and was great because of the optical / digital out to run in my surround sound. X-Fi is the new audigy i take it?

EDIT: Yeah Logitech have some really nice peripherals out my mouse keyboard is their MX revolution / dinovo. it has crossed my mind to upgrade my surround sound as my bro is in need of some so i could flog him my existing stuff!

get some arctic silver 5.
no floppy?

consider the enermax infiniti 650w.

can't really recommend crucial at the mo as there's a few ppl locked in an endless rma loop of dying sticks, though it seems it's more the 5300 affected?

have the same mobo here with 4x geil ULL 6400 running sweet as :D

check out the akasa eclipse 62 case but the lian-li is lovely too.
you can install raid drivers from a usb memory stick/cd-r on vista :P. but if dual booting with xp a floppy drive will be needed. the only point in floppy drives now is xp raid drivers.

I will look into the antec as well, the reason i originally went for the Lian-Li was due to it being at a bargain price. I dont want to sacrifice on build quality though..

Going back to the x64 vista, if i was to dual boot with 32 XP to cover me on both basis would i need two product keys? Any opinions on dual booting would be good to.. :)
youd need to buy a seperate xp disk. just install xp then install vista to a different partition and itll automatically set up the dual booting. doesnt work with an upgrade disk like it did with xp though

RAID Easy to set up? Never done one before, always just added hard drive after hard drive...

yeah i'm back with xp, my vista64 experiance was a bit of a disaster, it killed my xp install (my own fault) and then my x-fi would only produce hiss :( oh well back with my trusty xp till creative get their driver act together.

you could lose the vista64 and use what you save on a xl black t-shirt err i mean a bfg 8800 640meg oc :D

W00t for the XL Black T-Shirt their great, really comfy :D

Onboard are ok as a backup, but a decent card will be much better, especially if your into music and gaming?
You will also get a slight performance increase using a dedicated sound card in games as the card itself will be processing the audio.

Believe me it's well worth the few pounds extra, especially on a decent rig like you are building.... ;)

I was running on Onboard Audio with my new rig for a while, and when i got the Creative Gamer and a set of Headphones the difference is amazing... you can hear people creeping up behind you - no more being stabbed in the back.... :p

never used raid myself so cant give any advice on that, all i know is that xp doesnt detect raid'ed hard drives unless drivers are given from floppy.

Will using 800mhz RAM instead of 1066mhz RAM sacrifice any performance? Or is this money well saved to go elsewhere?

1066 will offer slightly better perfomance in gaming but we are talking about 1 or 2 FPS.

OK Guys, cheers for all the help with the build think i'm almost to order. Just one last thing..

I'm adding a second hard drive, dual booting with XP 32bit, (after checking around some of my critical apps won't work with Vista entirely) to avoid compatibility problems.

I'm adding a sound card.

The last thing i'm still split on is the memory...

Do i go for 4x1gb ballstix @ 1066MHz:

So 2 x

OR go with (2 x 2GB) at 800mhz:

1 x http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-086-OC&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=

Aside from the price, any of these superior in quality / performance?
