Hey guys, I am in need of an upgrade.

Current spec is

Lian li v2010
Asus p5q Deluxe
Q6600 @ 3600mhz
4gb xms2
120gb ocz ssd
asus 5850
Corsair 520w psu tx i think?
Noctua dh14

I feel my machine is needing a upgrade. My case it way too big for my needs, i recently bought a zalman z9 plus for a 2nd rig and its great apart from the loud fans.

Would i get away with a cpu/mobo/ram upgrade and get a nice performance jump with my current graphics card or is it worth getting a new gfx too?

£500 for components give or take + £100 for case with quiet fans.

Are all your drives including DVD drive a SATA interface? the SSD is but what about the rest?

Do you have a 64bit OS?

Want SLI/Crossfire as an option?

Sure jamesfreddie will post something before the answers to questions:D

Did you keep the 120mm fan on the side panel in the Zalman Z9? It rattles like (insert expletive) if you have. I move it to the top or the bottom of the case and with the fan controller set to low it does help with the fan noise but still has plenty of airflow.

Move it off the side panel buddy. I still prefer the Z9 over the CM-690. I've used the Z9 a lot in builds (i use one myself).

I like stulids spec but we've helped another guy out on here and he went with the CM 690 (it has fewer fans). When OC'ing the i5K his temps were much much higher than what I've had with the Z9, so he is now looking to add more fans.

Seeing as this case was dearer than the Z9 in the first place i dont really see the appeal of the CM case.....each to their own mind :)

There is a dust filtered place for the fan at the bottom of the case. Let it suck cool air in from there. I advise people raise the case up on something to let air circulate underneath the case.

What res are you gaming at? The 5850 is actually better than the 6850.....we are expecting the 7800 series cards at the end of the month. 500W ish is ample really for a midrange GPU.

Your PSU is still good enough, its the HX520w right? which is 150mm long, the case has maximum space for a 160mm long PSU due to the unique placement.

The only negative is the USB3.0 front ports require a USB3.0 19pin header on the motherboard, it hasn't got one (it has two rear USB3.0 ports) you can get an adapter cable to convert this 19pin header to standard USB2.0 motherboard headers which is does have.

Your 5850 compares well to a GTX560ti for example - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/295?vs=330

Have you tried overclocking the GPU. I did use the 2012 benchmarks from anandtech, stulid was using 2011. The newer benchmarks include BF3.....what games do you play out of interest?

I tried overclocking when I first got it but didnt see enought improvement to justify the extra noise of the fan.

I play mostly leagueoflegends, tf2 and some swtor

(£154.16)
Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7850 OC Windforce 2X 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card w/ Nexuiz, Sleeping Dogs & Dirt Showdown PC Games £161.99
(£134.99) £161.99
(£134.99)
Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £81.98
(£68.32) £81.98
