Ask yourself if you'd pay that for a Rover 25.
Personally I can't stand rovers and wouldn't put up with a damaged seat and the fact that the head is going to warp again before you sell it.

If you like rovers then well good luck.
 
Is a K series engine so make sure he checks the head gasket. Warm the car up and check the oil on the underside of the filler cap and on the dipstick, if its frothy or like gunge you've got a problem.
 
Thanks for the feedback, think he is seriously considering it and the owner seemed to have looked after it well (his name is not DannyW). Any ideas what it is worth?
 
Tell him it's not worth more than 1200 quid & if he buys it he'll need RAC membership.
 
I wouldn't buy one at that price. If the head gasket hasn't gone already it will at some point and you'll have to fork out at least £500 to get it fixed.

If your mate had only spent a couple hundred quid on it he could just write it off as a loss and buy a different car but If I were him I'd spend that 2 grand on anything else.

edit just saw the auction ended, did he buy it?

Of course its worth more than 1200 quid - much more.

Whether its a good buy or not is a completely different matter, personally I think they are very poor cars - but they are very popular (And were at one stage the UK's best selling 'hot hatch') and there is absolutely no way a 2002 one is worth only 1200 quid!
 
You can get a kit to prevent a HG failure can you not?

Supposedly the radiator was too small or something on those lines? My dad was banging on about it, and his hatred for the things too.
 
Land Rover made a replacement head gasket that supposedly fixed the problem but a lot of MG/Rovers already went pop at least once before that got fitted.

IIRC i thought it was something to do the thermostat opening a valve too late or something?
 
They're quite good value for money IMO. You get a reasonably new, low milage car fo not a lot of money. Get some aa breakdown repair cover to cover the cost of the headgasket going and you have a fun little car with a relatively pokey, revvy engine (let's not forget that the k series was fitted to the elise) in a not-bad looking car with air con and electric windows. It has shorter gearing and better suspension and seats than the 25. Ignore people saying it's just a rover, it would be like dismissig the 3 series BMW because of te 316iES.

Yes the head gasket is weak, but it isn't as much of a problem as people make it out to be!

If you look after it, don't let it overheat etc it should be fine and if its already gone and been fixed properly it should be fine!

Still its a risk, so you buy knowing you may have to spend the money fixing it!

It is basically a Rover 25, which may put you off, personally I like them. I currently own a 220 SDi, which is virtually identical to the 25's. The MGs have better suspension and a bodykit, thats about it really.

Having had to 220 for just over 1 1/2 years, its a nice place to be, but rattles, lots, so if your used to something nicer it will annoy you. Its not a bad choice of model, but you could get better for £2k I think
