Hi all,

I'd just like to know what the 'motto' is off this school logo here:
NotreDameLogo.gif

I make it: 'Ah Quil Est (Bon) [might go at the front] Le Bon Dieu'
I'm pretty sure it's Latin, but I wonderred if anyone could help out with a translation?

ooo and if someone could provide a little phonetical demonstration on how to say it that would be great too. :D

Much appreciated if so. :)

Peter

The best way to phonetically speak this is to put on your best French accent.

After all, the motto is in French?

At least I think it is. I did Latin years ago during years 7 and 8 at school. Was terrible at it, and although French is derieved from Latin, and it looks double dutch to me, babel fish manages to translate it as "ah that he is the good god" (French to English).

thats french yes. dieu is God in french, Deus is God in Latin.
Ah thanks for that :)

(could be where?)
When I said '(Bon) [might go at the front]' I meant that the 'Bon' might be meant to be on the front of the phrase. If you see the picture, that 'Bon' does appear to be in the middle of it, but could be on the line above.

According to my belgian flatmate, the motto says "ah he is good, the good god"

Joe.

My French is a little rusty, but wouldn't the Qu make it

'Ah he who is good, the good god' ? (essentially 'whoa, how good is god?')

yeah i think the literal translation would be "ah he who is good, the good god" where the seperate "bon" is in the middle of the sentence, not at the start.

I guess my french flatmate gave a better converted translation though, missing out the "who"
