A little moan about laptops

I used to think laptops were pretty cool but their annoyances are starting to get to me now. Like right now, I'm sitting in my garden but the sun's bright, so up goes the contrast on the screen, thus off goes the battery (<1hr on full contrast) so now I've got an extension lead trailed out of the conservatory. I also find myself constantly twiddling around so that the reflection in the screen is always reflecting something dark, otherwise I just see an ugly face in the screen :p I'm squinting right now trying to make out these words that I'm typing and every spec of dust that lands on the screen is instantly illuminated by the sun.

*sigh*

The solution, I suppose, is to go inside. So the point of me having a laptop? None, unless you're planning to work on the move (e.g. not at home) you might as well have a desktop :( So much for working in the garden with a cool beer this summer! I suppose I could sit in the shade to stop the dust illuminating... but the sun's the whole reason I'm out here!

/end moan

Laptops are basically meant for moving around places, and use on trains etc.

Not for sitting in the garden :p

hate laptop keyboards... cant touch type on them for the life of me...

and the mouse....... useless!

Get an umbrella and tie to to the side of the laptop screen so that it shades the screen :)

Haha yeah, maybe they need to make an outdoor laptop. Perhaps it could be integrated with a BBQ tray and pop-out skewers instead of a CD drive and card reader :D

You could seriously market that!

Forget USB powered lamps, hoovers or even missile launchers. What you need is a USB powered umbrella!

That has solar panels on top that supply a small amount of power via a separate power socket plug-in?

Ive got one of those and it doesn't work' the overall brightness of the the sun is just too much for my laptop :(

.. and I'm in Scotland too :p

If they made a laptop which had a screen with more than 500nits, then this wouldn't be a problem. You'd probably have to have a spare battery pack tho, or a solar charger. :)

I like the umbrella idea. As well as having solar panels charging the laptop, you could have a little wind turbine sitting on top of the umbrella adding to the power.

Don't let the goverment see this, they will steal the idea and market it as a new way to lower your carbon footprint.

Also, they are mostly dark coloured, so the will absorb the heat when in direct sunlight, so will probably over heat and DIE.

That's true, unless you are using an IBM, their built quality is awesome! I am on a T40 now, not the best specs, actually quite poor if you compare it to today's dual (or quad  ) core cpu systems, but as I don't play games I don't see the reason for such a machine anyway.

In short, IBM for the win ;)

im currently using a laptop and im finding it easier to touch type than my desktop keyboard!

Hmm, time to look up patents for collapsible umbrellas /sun shades that expand from pcmcia slots ;)
