a lot of memory usage

im running vista, the only programs i ahve open are

firefox/avg/dumeter/steam and yet my memory usage is running at 950mb!! Thats nearly half my max usuage (2gb memory)

surely this is high?

Nope that's about normal. Don't worry about it. If your PC starts to become sluggish with normal usage then come back

And awaits Bledd. doing the obligatory upgrade to 4GB+ RAM.

SuperFetch monitors which applications you use the most and preloads these into your system memory so they'll be ready when you need them. Windows Vista also runs background programs, like disk defragmenting and Windows Defender, at low priority so that they can do their job but your work always comes first.
