Seems this man can magically gain weight just sat at home eating a balanced healthy diet provided to him by his wife.

I was 23 stone at one point im now 17 and still working on it, this lazy moaning old git needs to stop porking out rather than demand an operation. Its a simple biologial FACT that if you eat less calories than you burn you lose weight, he should be burning approx 2300-2600 calories a day just sat there so god only knows how many calories he is eating a day to be gaining. He certainly isnt eating a healthy diet ( like he SHOULD for his diabetes- something i also have ).

he claims a restricted calorie diet didnt work... im sure the medical profession would love to study this miracle of science. Seems he can create energy out of nothing! ( or hes talking crap )

WAAAAAA........ i dont want to take responsibility and eat properly. Grow up man and stop blaming others!

I may come across as being heartless but i was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 2 years ago ( at 22 stone ) and ive had to work hard to resist temptation, cut out sugars and lose weight. It takes will power and its not easy... his eyesight and feet are no doubt down to still eating sugar!

My god if he ate no sugar in his diet and was on metaformin he would never have gotten so bad.

I lapsed last year and started on the biccies again, after 2 months i got numbness in my right foot and it scared the bejesus out of me! im now fully commited to getting in shape and down to 13 stone where i should be. The numbness went away about a week after stopping eating sugary things oddly enough ( weird that eh! ) :p

In the spirit of fairness why dont they put him in a secure hosiptal and actually see what happenes when he is on a REAL calorie controlled diet and not one at home, i would firmly bet both my testicles that he would lose weight.

This just screams to me of the blame culture around right now, blame everyone but yourself because its easier!

He blames it on the medication.. but there is no medication that can break the laws of physics.

If energy in > energy out then get fat.

True but some meds (eg for thyroid, steroids etc) can make you hold a lot of water and gain weight regardless of fat. :p The story in the OP isn't as bad as one I read t'other day. A fat family got a gastric bypass each and the mother of the family claims she went on a 900 calorie/day diet and GAINED four stone. :o:D

How can a gastic band help him if he is already on a perfectly healthy and calorie controlled diet? oh thats right if he was he wouldnt need one as it would have no effect what so ever! :D

And yes weight gain is a side effect of some drugs BUT you have to eating enough to be able to gain weight in the first place, if you burn 2500 a day and eat only 1800 its impossible to gain weight, you may retain water but not gain fat its impossible.

I just dont know why he thinks a gastric band will work? all it does it stop you eating as much food at a time, making a smaller stomach so you feel fuller. But if he is already eating the correct diet how is this going to help in any way? he is over eating and he knows he doesnt have the will power to stop so he hopes the band will provide the will power for him!

And if he cant leave the house his family MUST be the ones providing his food, so they are also not helping by letting him over eat.... gah!

Hmm I have problems with trying to fall asleep so I decided to buy some sleeping pills in the supermarket, apparently herbal stuff, I gained 4 pounds in 2 days. Naturally its very hard for me to put on weight but since I started taking those pills I gained 8 pounds in total of 6 days of taking these pills. I do not take the pills anymore as they didn't help me sleep but...I was quite surprised how out of nowhere (my diet was the same) my body suddenly started gaining weight.

Talking of medical miracles!!:D

4 stones in less than 10 minutes:)

In all seriousness, when I read this story, I thought exactly the same as you.
I've never really been over weight, 12.5 stones @ 5'6" but for the last few months I decided to sort my self out in terms of diet, excercise etc. Now down to 11 stones 10 lbs and still falling.
As you quite rightly point out, it isn't easy & requires discipline & effort but it is possible.

Given the weight and the short space of time, that was probably water retention. Of course, chemicals in your body can affect how much water it retains and thus your overall weight (to a small degree), but nothing like what is described in the OP.

About a year and half/2 years actually :p

Im pretty sure i was 23 stone and lost a bit, then i got diagnosed, ive gone down from 22 to 17 in less than 2 years anyway, and about half way to my goal now. Im doing it slowly so it stays off hopefully... I have had to reprogramme the way i see food and how i think about it. Its not a diet its a lifestyle change thats needed.

I was a greedy glutinous pig! i can see that now but at the time i just justifed it to myself and carried on. Makes me sick now to even think about the sort of crap i used to eat! eeeewwwwwwww

You can gain weight on a very calorie restricted diet. For example if you eat 1000 calories a day, but eat all those calories in one meal in the evening then your body will think it is in a famine situation and adjust your metabolism accordingly.

It isn't just about calories, it is also about what makes up those calories and how you eat them.

The only sure way to lose weight is regular, small, balanced meals and plenty of regular cardio exercise. It is hard work but it does work.

With me, it's all about comfort eating:o
I tend to be an all or nothing type of person so in terms of diet, it has to be very strict & pretty hardcore to work.

Generally find that after the first few weeks, it does become easier as the blood sugars start to stabilise.
Started taking Chromium tablets which are reputedly very good at controlling blood sugar levels.

Also find that exercise, i.e 30 mins on treadmill acts as a pretty good appetite suppressant.

Only thing I would say about the guy in OP is that he is quite old and as such, he may be at a metabolic dis-advantage.

I would agree with this and would add that you are better eating most of your calories up to & including lunch time, followed by a lighter tea.

Also, if possible, avoid eating after say 8 O'clock at night.

In terms of excercise, regular cardio is best along with some weight work as increased muscle mass helps to burn calories and from a psychological perspective, if you start to see results, you're more likely to keep going.

There is some hope out there for many of you with DM2. Roy Taylor, at Newcastle University has been doing some interesting research.
