A mini rant

Generally speaking I get ID'd for very little.

That said, when I was about 18, I was ID'd to buy a PG film....

Was lucky I had my licence on me tbh...

I get ID'd now and then and it never really bothers me. One instance really angered me though:

I was 23, and going to meet my brother and some of his friends at a local pub. I hadn't seen my brother in a year so I was looking forward to it. Got to the bar and ordered a pint and the girl asked for ID. I didn't have any on me so I was just like "Oh, I only have my student card.. will that do?" (student card has the pass logo on it so should be accepted). She wouldn't accept that so i said it was ok and I'd just have a coke. "No, you have to leave". At this point I tried to reason with her: "look, I'm 23 years old, I've just finished work and looking forward to having a drink with my brother who I haven't seen in a year". She wasn't having any of it though so I actually had to leave the pub and let my brother and his friends down their drinks before moving on to another pub.

It was absolutely humiliating, being told to leave the premises, with a valid student ID, 5 years over the age limit. I've not been back to that pub.

do you have to be 18 to be in a pub?

my step son was working in a newcastle nightclub as a dancer and a glass collector when he was 17( all above board paying NI etc , not cash in hand)

tbh it didn't bother me, as shops/people working in shops can get royally bummed for not checking ID

This is very true. I work in a bookies and I was reprimanded for failing to ID a 'test bettor' sent out by a company called 'Serve Legal'.
I remember serving this particular person and on my judgment, they were fine to serve. The bettor was 22 years old and looked older.
In the eyes of the company I work for, this is gross misconduct. I served a 'young stranger' and I received a 1st written warning with the option to appeal but I didn't bother because I wouldn't of got anywhere. They took the fact that I had passed test bettors twice before hand, but still that will stay on my file.
The way the bookies see it as; could lose their license, both be heavily fined and I would certainly lose my job. Staff are literally pushed to the point where if you have to think about the customers age then they must ID or risk losing your job. Which like me and many other is not an option!

If I were you OP i'd chill the **** out and carry ID on you if your buying age restricted products and entering licensed premises.

Just a heads up, unless you physically age rapidly, it's *still* going to matter in 8 days time!

I remember when I got ID'd at ASDA with my dad because my dad was buying some ale and because I placed it onto the till belt (or whatever they are called), I was classed as the person buying it and thus got asked for ID. Dad wasn't happy, made a few comments, and we left.

In all truthfulness they are only protecting their own job. If a situation arose where someone who was under 18 bought something such as drink they would be in a lot of trouble so it's more worthwhile to deal with the hassle of asking people for ID.

I was in Sainsburys at lunch and walked past a stand offering tasters for alcohol spirits (forget which). She asked me for ID (I'm 23), I presented and then she still refused me. How does that work? I want my free alcohol!

Prevent other people buying him drinks.

But it's still ******** because he hadn't had a drink. Sure if they see his friends handing him a pint but if there are children running around and they haven't seen him drink any alcohol, they're being completely unreasonable asking for ID.

I get ID'd all the time and im 41, although they are more strict over here, its just a part of life nowadays. Tesco's always used to ID me though, and that was only 3 years ago.
