A minor rant - Stupid shopkeepers

As I said before, those with the begging bowls out. ;) :p
Doesn't ROI have the highest standard of living in the EU?

Notes from NI are great. Plastic money, what an excellent idea! Can go through the wash a few times and not be a problem at all.

Wonder what'd happen if a garage was refusing acceptance of a Scottish note after you'd filled up, and it was your only way of paying.

I guess you either you have the option of either letting them take it back out (probably a tad arkward for everyone), convincing them to take the note, or driving home and getting the right note, let them know what you are doing though (perfectly legal... since you never had any intention of permantly depriving them...)

Helluva first post dude, nicely said!:) Should rock a few complacent people in here out of their "We don't need no stinkin' EU - we've got an Empire!" fallacies.

That wouldn't be Fowey in Cornwall last summer would it?
We had a local guy throwing around a stupid amount of fake scottish notes and they ended up circulating around the town before someone at one of the banks noticed they were fake. I was working in one of the pubs at the time and we had a few customers who complained when we said we couldn't take scottish notes and gave the reason why. A couple of people got really irritated and demanded to speak to the landlord (who is scottish) it was so funny seeing them complain about it to a scottish guy.

There were signs up in all the shops (and the banks) and it had nothing to do with ignorance, there was a genuine reason for it and as far as i'm concerned anyone who was offended by after having the situation explained to them is pretty sad.

No, it was a few years ago, somewhere in the north of England.

I don't know where all this about Scottish notes being legal tender in England has come from - they aren't.

However, most English Banks will accept them, so it is usually safe for shopkeepers to accept them as they can bank them.

Scottish Banknotes

The shopkeeper was well within his rights to refuse to accept it, although in my opinion pretty stupid to do so.

Thanks for the praise and the welcome friend, even though it's not warrented :D. Anyone can see the pro's and con's of the EU. Some just choose to be educated by the BNP's election pamphlets. :)

I never claimed they were, in fact I posted the fact that they're not even legal tender in Scotland!

The point has been picked up on in post 49 and confirmed by me in post 50.
