Im looking to purchase a mouse for my macbook pro (arriving soon).

I dont plan to use the mouse all the time, only when im doing design work. When im surfing the net, playing media etc.. im happy to use the trackpad.

Ive looked at the mice currently on the market and the two that have drawn my eye are the logitech vx revolution, mx revolution, vx nano and the MS mobile memory mouse 8000.

There are a few factors involved in my choice. It would be ideal to have bluetooth so i dont need a receiver. Ive never had my own laptop and therefore havent any experience with complications of having a stick jutting out of the side. Is it a hassle? is it worth choosing a mouse for its bluetooth ability over the mouse's actual features.

I like the idea of having on the fly zoom or magnifier, and definitely need forward and back buttons on the side.

The special scroll flywheel on the logitechs are a major attraction on paper, but do people really use it or is it just novelty?

The vx nano seemed to be a good choice at first, tiny receiver which can be connected 24/7, flywheel, aesthetically pleasing, BUT as it is to be a work mouse i will spend many hours with it and have heard that its mini size gets uncomfortable very fast.

The mx revolution sounds good in all respects but the receiver size deters me. i dont want to have to purchase new receivers. im not the most careful person so it can easily be snapped off. my gf used to have a belkin usb wifi dongle and that had to be replaced 3-4 times after numerous breaks. also is it suitable for portable use?

the vx revolution sounds like an all rounder and is top of my list so far. its moderately sized, mid sized receiver (when comparing vx nano and mx rev). although the receiver thing still bugs me.

the ms mobile memory mouse has a bluetooth mode so NO receiver, which attracts me a lot. ive never had a ms mouse so cant make any comments on performance.

can anybody help me in my decision making?

any help would be ideal, experiences, opinions etc.. GOOD and BAD.

thanks :)

oh, i forgot to say any recommendations would be nice!

I replaced my Wireless Mighty Mouse I got with my Mac Pro after about a week with a Logitech MX Revolution and it's by far the best mouse I have ever used. Using Logitech Control Centre you can create profiles for each application specifying pre-defined actions or user-defined keyboard commands for each button on the mouse.

I've just moved from a wireless intellimouse explorer thingy to a bluetooth mighty mouse..

I honestly dont know what people's issues are with them! I really like it, it feels ergonomic and the way I use cmd, option etc with the click really suit me..

Hmm! I cant fault it.. after some serious umming and aahing when I bought a mouse - I'm really chuffed!

I've got the VX Revolution notebook version, it's cracking. Lots of buttons, tiny receiver that stows away in the mouse when not in use, and it's not too small to be comfortable. I'd buy the same one again if I lost it.

I realise this is slightly off topic but I've written it now so I'll post it.

Maybe its just the way I use a mouse, but when I'm drag/dropping on a large screen I tend to hold down left-click, drag my mouse across the pad a little, lift the mouse off the pad and put it down again in the starting position, and then repeat. Now reading that back sounds ridiculous, but the mouse only leaves the mat about 1mm or so, and its the only way (without adjusting the tracking settings) to cover a lot of screen when you only have very limited space on the desk. You cannot do this with the MM. If you lift off the case, you lose the click. Thats my number one problem with it.

You speaka da truth! No seriously, I see exactly what you're saying. Maybe its just the way I use my mouse... and i'm also a gammy left so that may have something to do with it! :)

ok, i finally decided to go for the vx revolution. medium size, range of features, storage for receiver, not too many buttons. also a bargain purchase of £28!

Quick question, are the VX nano and VX revoltuion the same mouse or different? Also do all the buttons work under macosx with no extra drivers ?

and finally which is better in terms of comfort, for long periods of time working with a mouse, VX, MX rev or MX518 ?

cheers

i use my spare resolution at work with the mac and i gotta say.. it just doesnt work that well - not sure what it is - u dont get the same mouse movement as u do with the logitech software on the PC

there is a bit of freeware software you can get for the mac which improves the movement of the mouse - cant remember the name but it is listed on the apple downloads site

I've not had the VX but have have the MX and had the 518. MX hands down for comfort and use. Battery life is very very good as well. I used to flatten the battery in my G7 once a day the MX I charge once a week.

No its not bluetooth it uses a small usb 2.4Ghz dongle.

Have you installed the logitech control centre? That made a lot of difference for me once I'd got it configured right, made it feel almost identical to how the mouse in Windows does.

I really love my Mighty Mouse :)

Only issue I have is the wheel on it, sometimes gets stuck for some reason. Apart from that, it's lovely! Feels amazing in your hand, most comfortable mouse I've owned.
