A new build, around £1k

Hi guys, I was thinking of building a new computer (never built one before) - I have a monitor and everything, and intend to use it on full HD for photoshop, a bit of gaming and some 3D CAD work.

It came to a little over the budget I was intending, but I would like it to run quietly, hence the replacement fans and cooler etc.

I don't intend to overclock at the moment, what do you think of the setup? I am not sure whether to go for the 5770 instead, or even the 5770 Vapour X as I heard it ran cooler and quieter

The raptor drive is to install the OS onto seperate from the main storage drive - as I heard this makes the system run quicker?

I would be interested in any comments on it, particularly on my choice of motherboard, RAM and PSU, as I have no idea what is and isn't good :p

Thanks in advance:)

Hello & Welcome to the forums :)

You can drop the PSU down to 600w~ and not worry about the raptor go for the Samsung F3 500gb or SSD.

If your not worried about SATA 3 or USB 3 change the board to this Asus

How about the following:

Corsair HX 650W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply - Corsair have a good name + the Antec is out of stock

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 - A little cheaper and is still a solid board, just depends if you like blue. However, the two that I have had have both had a bit of what I think is capacitor squeel? when CPU hault is on. If you overclock this is turned off anyway.

OCZ Vertex 60GB SSD - Depends how much space you need on your primary drive. If 60GB is enough I would consider going for an SSD.

The built looks pretty solid imo as is, but the above can be considered.

Ah, that asus looks a good board (I was put off by the 'Palm' thing before, as I thought it was for a mobile device or something ), I was originally planning on going for the P6T but it seems to have gone from the site -

Those SSDs are very nice, however if I were to get those, would it be better to stick with the 6Gb sata ports on the £170 mobo?

After seeing a few bad reviews on the OCZ memory, I think that corsair does look a better choice

Asus P6T Deluxe is a great mobo :)

No, Sata 6Gb/s wouldn't give you more performance as those SSDs are SATA II anyway. The performance difference is too small to be of any concern right now.

OCZ has failed with their triple channel DDR3 kits somehow, I wouldn't risk getting them over more reliable Corsair sticks.

This is another build I made for you, it won't offer SLI on this board but is a good overall system and saves you a lot of cash:

BTW, Scythe Yasya is a bit overpriced here at OcUK albeit being a good cooler. There are many other choices if you look around, this cooler is only a suggestion.

And is the likes of photoshop currently utilizing the six cores ?

Find it sursprising it is slower if indeed photoshop is using the six cores.

Read through that benchmark quite surprising really, I changed the benchmark to the 1090T and still saw the i7 beating it in quite a few tests

@ Mr Krugga
That looks a good set up if I wanted go with an AMD and save the cash. Although that case it supposed to be a good quiet one, I am fairly set on the P183 as it is a little stronger (I will be transporting it a fair amount).

It seems I have two options here, the cheaper AMD, or one more like the original with the modifications greywolf/krugga said... and £300-£400 difference between the two... I am going to do a bit more research into both of them and weigh up the pros and cons :)

What sort of performance difference do you think I could expect from the extra cash? It seems like the extra money is would be primarily being spent on future proofing
