Sandy Bridge has got to go down as one of Intel's greatest ever generations. There are still people today chugging along on i5s and i7s that still don't feel the need to do an upgrade.

Coffee Lake has finally arrived and brought a core count increase but that is down to the fact that AMD have a truly competitive product on the market. Let's hope that next year we see both companies produce even more compelling CPUs and then perhaps people like OP will feel the inclination to upgrade

Until someone gives it a proper test, which I don’t suppose is possible unless you can source a brand new Z77 board, I’d put my money on CPU degradation being a misconception.

My theory is motherboard components, especially VRM degrade before a CPU will.
