A night of problems!

First, my virgin media broadband decides to run at 56k-like speeds and is still playing up even now, then I get stuck on customer services hold for 15 minutes without getting to speak to a human, so I hang up, and now…. my 60 gig PS3 appears to have croaked :(

Really not keen on the look of the slim, but I may have the bite the bullet and get one, as the issue I have with the 60 gig seems terminal from the stuff I have read – it powered itself down to a flashing red light and 3 beeps, I can then press the power button for it to change to solid red, press again for green and about a second of fan spin before going back to the flashing red and 3 beeps.

Can’t complain I suppose, it’s lasted a lot longer than my, and most other peoples, 360 did, and got far more attention than the 360, so hey ho!

I was planning on picking up a slim on the way home tonight, but I’m not sure now – the hope had been to temporarily replace the slim’s hard drive with that of my 60 gig one, then simply offload all my savegames onto a USB stick; but it seems from some posts I have read on a Sony forum, this wont be possible as the new console will force a reformat of the drive!

I don’t suppose anyone knows for certain if this is true? If so, I may knock Sony gaming on the head, as I really CBA to re-play Fallout 3, Oblivion and Assassins Creed 2, just to get back to where I was on each :(

Sounds like YLOD, I got mine refurbished after the warranty had expired though much like the 360's RROD problem.

[edit] As soon as you change a harddrive in a PS3 you must format the drive before it will work, the only way to get the saves back is to let someone repair your PS3 by doing a reflow [/edit]

Knackers! Will have to do this I guess; probably cheaper than buying a whole new console though :p

Edit: I take it Sony can fix the PS3, if so, any idea on costs and will I get my console back so that I can use the hard drive? If not, anyone got any recommendations on any third parties who can fix it?

Sony will refurbish the PS3 but this means you will get another PS3 so you will not get your drive and saves back, they might repair it for free though but you have to ask Sony.

If you go to a 3rd party the cost varies, here in The Netherlands it is ~75 euro and a claimed success rate of 90% with the advantage of keeping your data and saves and you get better cooling as they replace the thermal compound.

As I had some save games backed up on an external drive I went thru Sony as it was free.

To be honest, I would prefer to do whatever it takes so that I keep my saves, however, from some of the things I have read, third party fixes can cost about £100 and may not last all that long, if that’s the case, I could be looking at the fix, plus the cost of buying a new PS3 for the piece of mind.

It’s a real shame that Sony have tied the hard drive to the console in this way – correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that if I were to unplug the drive from my 360, I could easily plug it into another without any problems? If this is right, then I personally think that Sony’s way is very ill-conceived!

It would be nice if there was some sort of data recovery service offered, where they could take my drive and transfer the saves on disc or something, even if that cost me £20 plus shipping, it would be more appealing than the prospect of re-playing my games to get back to where I was :(

Dont forget you can download other peoples saves from the internet as a last resort, means you lose "your" hard work but can at least pick up from the same place

As I was missing some of my saves I looked into that but haven't found a way to get the data off the drive and restored on another PS3

In the end I just said 'oh well' (or it could have been swearies) and accepted that I had lost some saves of games that don't allow backing up like RE5 and Skate2

Now I back up saves to an SD card everytime I have played a game for a long time, I also sync trophies as much as possible as you also lose all non-synced trophies as well.

Passed a shop on Crawley at the weekend that carried out YLOD repairs for £55

I'm very confused as to why you can't back up your saves, as I copied all of mine to a USB stick when I had to reformat HDD, I'm obviously missing something??

His PS3 wont turn on so he can back them up i assume :)

Disadvantage is that you will not find a save with same levels/percentage completed and with the same equipment etc..

Also games like RE5 (before the patch) and Skate 2 don't allow backing up so you cannot use another save.

Also Trophies are most likely disabled when using another save.

This is correct – my PS3 wont power up, so I can’t copy things to USB or use the Sony backup :(

I relented last night and picked up a Slim on the way home, I’ve also got some trial software called HDClone – apparently, someone managed to use that to do a bit-by-bit copy to a new drive; I’m not holding out much hope it will work, but plan to use that to copy the 60gig to the new drive; if I can at least get back in to backup the saves I will be happy.

Not to keen on downloading other people’s saves, I did manage to find a Fallout backup (thankfully), but the AC2 saves were locked so you cannot copy them off to memory stick, so that is a no no sadly.
