A odd HDD

I have infront of me a Fujitsu Amilo laptop. it has a 120gb WD hdd in it, it detects it in the BIOS and posts fine.. It boots up to a black screen with a mouse.. i thourght it might be corrupt..

I put the windows xp disk in, it loads the files. and then says there is no HDD present or somthing like that.. I have tried 2 hdds.. and i woul dlike some advice please :S
 
it worked fine before.. with w7, but all of a sudden after about 4 mothins it just didnt boot 1 day.... i have had XP on it before..... worked fine..

what version of XP is it ?

depending on what SATA controller is used, some of the earlier versions of XP needed you to add the driver during the installation process.

its best to use XP with SP1 or 2 already in the installer, this usually comes with the required sata controller drivers
