Hi,

I visited New York in October 2005. My passport was stamped upon entering the country, but I never got it stamped on the way out again. I was only there for 5 days. I didn't do anything dodgy or the like - they just didn't stamp my passport as I left the country.
I now hear that this could be a problem when I return to America later this year - as I could be on their database as still in the country, and therefore an illegal immigrant, of sorts.
I have however visited a couple of other countries since, who have stamped my passport upon arrival and departure without question.

Am I being paranoid? Or should I get something done about this?

Thanks for any help!

I have been to the U.S. a few times and have never had a stamp on exit. The one they give you on entry should have a date on it by which you have to leave the country, if you are still there then without an extended visa you become an illegal alien.

If they did get funny all you do is provide payments for tickets or your passprt an thewy will check that it reentered this country on a certain date etc...

Wouldn't worry.

the UK also doesnt do exit stamps, they stopped about 8 years ago...

i wouldnt worry, since even if you dont have an exit stamp from the US, you'll have an entry stamp into the country when you left the US (and presumably entered another country), so if they question you, just point out to them you entered some other place and therefore didnt overstay in the US....

they leave part of the green portion visa waiver card with your passpoer when you enter, they take this when you leave and this reconcilles the records ( and the swipe of the machine readable passport page )

OK, thanks guys!

Good to know. Sorry for being paranoid - just didn't fancy having an issue at the check in when I head out next!

Thanks again.

I had that green visa waiver slipt left in my passport, when I tried to exit the country they gave me a load of documents to fill in to prove that I hadn't been illegally in the US (in the 2 hours since I entered the country). I never bothered filling them in (wasn't going to waste my time on their mistake) and haven't had any problems since (must have been through LA 5 times since then).

What this guy said...as long as they took the green visa waiver form on exit (could've been done by the airplane company) then you'll be fine.
