So I need to return a hard drive to maxtor, I guess that shouldn't surprise anyone. But when I bought it, all it came with for packaging was an anti-static bag. I checked the maxtor/seagate returns-packaging guide and they seem to want me to ready it to survive a nuclear disaster  Needless to say, I don't have the packaging they want. This is the first time I’ve ever returned a hard drive, for those of you who have done this before: how should I package the hard drive?

Thanks. :)

LMAO!
Cheeky sods.

Put it in a anti-static bag, and then get one of those bubble wrap envolopes. Sorted.

lol, (the AWB box) was a box that my granddad made when I was born (he used to do carpentry in his spare time), it's had my stuff in ever since. A.W.B. are my initials. I kinda adopted AWBbox as the alias I use on computer-related forums :)

I always keep 1 hard drive packaging at all times incase of HD failure and I need to ship one. Doubt they will make a big deal if you don't wrap it up exactly as they ask.

good good. though I really have no packaging at all at home. I might have to nick some bubble wrap from work :)

Ahh - good story AWB, look after that box :)

For a hard drive?!! surely it needs more protection than that.

If you go to the post office/stationers you can buy a suitable box and expanded polystyrene chips.

Lots of things are delivered in such boxes with polystyrene chips or similar, keep a few of various sizes in the loft rather than throwing away and your sorted if you need to RMA anything.

A thought just occured to me regarding keeping packaging. And that is that I have never bought a hard drive that has come an a box of its own. Even when I built my multi-harddrive spec machine below the disks I bought of (a competitor :o ) only came in anti-static bags too.

Ahh yes - Thrift tip #135....

....Thrift tip #136:

Cut up old Christmas cards to make gift tags for the following year.

...enjoy.

Bubblewrap, foam etc is specifically forbidden by maxtor. They send drives held firmly inbetween two moulded plastic supports inside a box.
aaw man :( what should I use? I don't think I can get any plastic supports.

Looking at the link on the 1st post, on the 3rd page is a diagram showing the HD in an antistatic bag, in foam with a hd sized aperture cut out, in a box. Or at least that's what it looks like to me.

All you need to do is ensure it is very well protected.

Then keep the box they send the replacement in.

Like other replies, I always keep at least one HD box incase of faults.

conventry from lancaster? no ta :p

I think you should, that way you can slap them upside the head for having the drive failing on you. In fact were you to do this I reckon a whip-round in the hard drive sub-forum would get you enough cash from disgruntled Maxtor owners that it wouldn't cost you anything. :D

Will Maxtor/Seagate not supply you with the relevant packaging? I'd have thought you could at least ask them to do so.

Seems like they removed themselves from any obligation to supply me with anything for free till they get the hard drive back. I guess it makes sense, otherwise they'd be constantly pestered with false claims for packaging :p

What i alway's used to do is choose the option which you give some of your credit card details for security, and they send the replacement before you sent the faulty one. that way you get the packing from them and you can tranfer any stuff if you need to.

they only take credit card info, so if you don't send the faulty one back to them, they can charge you for it. once they have the faulty one back though, you will be fine!
i did this a few times before when a couple of my HD's messed up!!

now u have a box and anti-static bag, perfect for retuning the HD in!!

hope they still have this option!

p.s. think it's called advance replacement or something like that.

I have done this before too and it worked very well. It was with Western Digital rather than Maxtor though and they sent the new hard drive in one of those boxes with the plastic supports so I just used that to send the old one back. I had to send it to Germany though which was quite expensive :(
