Hey all,
Am I right in thinking that a Visa Electron is a debit card so that there is no chance of having an overdraft?

Cos I'm about to order myself a 4gb memory stick pro duo and I really have no idea how much money I have in my card and was wondering if I dont have enough money would my order get cancelled or would I have an overdraft?
I was pretty certain that I would not get an overdraft but my cousin said that they may have overdraft activated. So I'm confuse now,can anyone help me out?

I can overdraw with my card from Abbey National. I have an authorized overdraft from them for up to £200 to make sure I don't get those nasty charges.

If I havent activated any kind of overdraw thing can I still overdraw from using my Halifax Visa Electron?Doesnt sound like I be getting my memory card until I find my bank statement!

if you haven't arranged an overdraft, there are two possibilities:

1
the card will be declined when you try to order, and you will know that you don't have enough wonga.

2
the order will go through, and the bank will set in in the red, without arrangement, and will slap you with an horrible charge, just to be spitefull.

2 is more likely.

surely that depends on the account you have arranged with the bank, and not the fact that it's electron...?

i dunno what ive arranged with the bank tbh,i'm with halifax and ive had this account since i was 11 or so and i havent altered it all

think i'm going to put off getting the card for a while until i find my previous statement! :(

It depends on the account. Visa electron is a debit card yes, but I have had different versions (although all from the halifax) with different accounts, one did have an overdraft facility.

You would need to set up an overdraft with your bank first, you certainly can have one with an Electron card if other conditions are also met.

If you try to do it without an overdraft and dont have sufficient funds it is likely to just decline, it is possible to go overdrawn without an over draft with an Electron card - just difficult too.
