Can you simply go in to travel agent and buy them over the counter or do you have to order them if you go to somewhere like the post office?

Where is the best place to buy them?
Thanks

I know the Post Office over here can give you Euros over the counter.

Tho I don't know whether or not that's just because we border the Eurozone.

Marks & Spencer offer a no commission currency exchange service but I don't know how their rates compare to the rest since I haven't needed to change any money for a while.

Depends how big the place is. All Post Offices with a exchange counter will carry the notes. Don't know where the best place to buy them at the moment is, sure somebody else will be able to put in for that.

I get mine when abroad and keep a small supply ready for the first days of the next holiday, generally get a better rate over there.

As said most POs keep them in stock. You'll need ID (passport etc) if you want to buy with a debit card though.

Money Saving Expert has a handy finder to see who offers the best deal though some sites have been removed at present.

It might be an easy way to "launder" the money off a stolen card.

If you max out cash machine withdrawals, then simply go to all the exchanges in town and get all the money off it, cash in hand.

I don't think that will be possible - most banks monitor spending patterns on cards.

You are not always best looking for commission free deals.
In most cases those selling Euro commission free are doing so at an exchange rate that isn't so good.
They have already taken the "commission" into account with their Exchange Rate.
