A question for the Cyclists.

Yes I always use the road on my bike especially if I am going 15-20mph. The road is safer than the pavement unless you are travelling very slow. Roads are generally smoother than the pavement and much more space but most of the country lanes have no pavements anyway. Generally 49 out of 50 cars give me enough room when they overtake but there's always some dosey idiot who seems too impatient.

I've been riding my bike for like 7 years and I never ride on the road. I ain't putting my life in danger just because of some stupid law.

I always ride past police and I've never been stopped for riding on the paths.

nice 1, quoting a law almost 200 yrs old, whilst technically i bow to you as it is illegal, your gonna struggle to get a policeman pulling you and quoting that law to give you the fixed penalty notice ...

If it 'aint broke don't fix it...

I sometimes cycle on the pavement, normally they are ones that go alongside national speed limit roads in non urban areas than ones regularly used by pedestrians. I do ride an XC bike though so curbs aren't really a problem and TBH I try and stay off the road as much as possible due to the ***** in metal boxes that try and run me over.

I did and occasionally still do cycle through the pedestrian shopping centre in my town (usually after 6pm so it's pretty much empty) but then, contrary to what people thought it isn't actually an area where cycling is prohibited. On the other hand I always slow to walking pace if I do meet a pedestrian, hey I even slow down and say excuse me when people are wondering aimlessly along cycle lanes as well... I must be getting old!:p

And a +1 for taking control of your part of the road. Cycling in the middle of your lane when you are doing the speed limit and anything from 3-4ft when going slower. Gives drivers more of a chance to see you, reduces their ability to try stupid overtaking maneuvers and gives you space to move into when they do.

I mostly ride on the pavement, unless the roads are fairly empty or if i'm going down a nice hill.

I'd prefer it if cycle paths were all like this:

Much safer for everyone.

I can just see that red car door opening and the cyclist slamming into it. :D

(slightly off topic but i cant find one via searching, either that or i suck at it, but is there a bikes/cycling discussion thread?)

I've been knocked over near there too (at a crossing before anyone pipes up) and I was walking!! Nutters round here.

I hate that junction. If I come from the Warrington side and go over the bridge, I either get a clear roundabout and can sail round at a reasonable speed, or I get cars waiting at the end of the bridge for passing cars, meaning I have to stop with them, and have to accelerate from a standstill on the roundabout. It's dangerous as hell when that happens.

When it does I usually just pull in near the pub and use the pedestrian crossings over the two slip roads, which has its own risks.

Lookie! A picture!

i don't but if im out with the kids then i make them cycle on the path, not in busy bits of town, then they walk!
I dont really care what anyone says to that because i would rather have my kids safe an get a small fine than have my kids run over by some young idiot paying more attention to the girl sat next to him than to the other road users, it happens.

Agreed.

I cycle on the pavement anyway on awkward road. Mainly because if I cycle on the road some motorist treat you like you shouldn't be there and I'm not up for bike on car road rage i.e.
As a driver I'd much prefer it if cyclists rode on the pavement, the further away they are from me the better.

I don't ride a bike much these days anyhow.

That's great for old grannies or nervous cyclists who are just cycling 1-2 miles to work.

Would drive me and anyone who does serious mileage barmy though. I'd rather be on the road. You get the occasional idiot motorist (see occasional idiot cyclists too) but I always give myself at least 3ft to the left to move into if someone is intent on cutting me up. And not riding in the gutter means motorists recognise you as a road user, rather than an object at the side of the road to be passed without slowing down.

It only gets really bad for people cycling on the road when they cycle in the gutter. Then they end up swerving out into traffic to avoid things, motorists give them zero space and don't slow down to pass them and they have nowhere to go if they get cut up.

Just a question, does anyone here wear a helmet everytime they go out?

I don't but i have one. And from now on i will wear one.

Around 8 miles from me, a bloke got hit by a bus (im unsure who was in the wrong) but most probably the cyclist.

Was hit by the bus, suffered severe head injuries and died in hospital :(

Just shows, something so light and little, may potentially save your life.

Had a idiotic cyclist sitting in my blindspot today (I drive a van). At least he had stopped at the red light, but if I was turning left he woulda been squished. Morons.

Depends entirely on the road, if I know of an accident blackspot I'm going to be avoiding it.

Helmets? (As mentioned above), you are a complete idiot if you don't wear one, thats right, an idiot!
There are very few safety precautions to be taken for bikes but a helmet is a very simple solution. There is simply no excuse for not wearing a helment, you are an idiot if you want to bump your head and end up dumb or dead when something that costs barely nothing could save you everything.
