ok, quick story and i need a really quick answer as im off to sort this in 20 minutes,

a friend of mine hired a tech out to his business to get wireless net up and running, the tech spent 3 days and bought him 2 different routers and cost my friend £120 (one of which was incompatible with ADSL) before my friend called me up.

i got the router working, a brand called DYNAMODE ???? (i only like and will only use netgear linksys and D-Link) but even though the laptop that was to be wireless was only 12 feet from the router, its signal strength was terrible and today has dropped out...

so ive advised him to get a new router as opposed to a brand ive never even heard of before that seems to be "el Generico"...

these are the choices...

LinkSys Wireless-G WAG354G ADSL Router / Gateway £62.22 inc.VAT

or

D-Link DI-624B 108Mbps Wireless Broadband Router £49.29 inc. VAT

which would you use and why...

also does anyone know if the D-Link will take an RJ11 phone jack as its for ADSL ?

Nope, the D-Link has an RJ45 WAN port.

It'll take it ok......but it'll never actually work :p

Don't go buying new routers unless your sure it's the router.
Wifi signals go i 2 directions, so your Adapter needs to have a range to match that of the router. If it's a popular adapter then it's probably the router, but 9 times out of 10 routers can out range adapters and it's a cheap adapter causing signal issues.

And a proud one at that :p

I'd have expected better for yourself though.

I'm not on form today, didn't get enough sleep due to the cheese eating surrender monkeys going on strike and generally messing my travel plans around.

Wireless is a dodgy subject when used in a house never mind a business. The signal can be poor due to many factors. Old routers in my opinion are poor for wireless for example the DG834G is pretty crap for wireless unless you live in one of these pre-fab (sp?) houses were a yawn could be heard at the far end of the house.

Now these MIMO routers such as the DG834PN is a big step up and I've tested 13 of them so far which have been very good in allowing the user to get a decent signal at great distance away even outside. (Finally encryption is an issue) One of the reasons why if wireless is needed, I opt for the PN before the G even though the G is like £30-£50 cheaper.

Like I said before, building vary from building so one router might work well in one house for example, but crap in another due to various factors in each hence why I bring a few different routers and test using each to get the best. I like the PN.

trust me, i am sure it is the router... its an ASUS adapter on the laptop and the laptops about 8 feet from the dynamode router and gets a really poor signal strength + 5mbps connection out of a possible 54,

in the end we took it back and got a full refund, then bought the LinkSys Wireless-G WAG354G ADSL Router / Gateway £62.22 inc.VAT

now... all is well, signal is excellent, 54mbps connection. couldnt be better.
