A quick favour...

The people who host the site are not the same people who manage the domain/dns stuff.

Looks like the domain is registered with fasthosts and the hosting is through tagadab?
It's fasthosts you'll need to speak to about this.

Setting the IP address in my hosts file, I get the site to load correctly so the hosting company are correct: the site is up and running.

I know that, I was on the phone to them to try and rule out a server issue because just as it so happens a server update was done on the server at the same time the site went down, so we were discussing with them if it was related to that or if it was something else, and it was at this point they said the site was working their end.
 
Even just doing a ping to the domain name returns no IP address so it does look like a DNS issue.

The site is working at their end.
They might use their own dns servers for diagnostics on their hosted sites or maybe some sort of testing tool, I'm not sure. But it is running correctly on their server, the problem you see when you try to visit the page is because the dns settings for the domain are not sending you to that server.
