A rant about ps3

been in my local game shop a fair bit lately where there has been people buying ps3 and xb360's, it was good to hear the assistant actually ask what the customer was connecting it too as in hdtv or ordinary tv ,then recommending the appropriate cable.
I dont know if they work on sales bonuses etc but it was good to hear, i wish more shop assistants would be so helpful!

So the ps3 doesnt come with a HDMI cable?

Does a 360 come with a charger cable/batteries for the control?

(dunno about wii's - not got one)

They both come missing quite a bit of kit that should be included in the box, just another way to lower costs really.

True, and the play and charge kit costs a fair bit more than a HDMI cable.

Aside from cost saving with not everyone having a HDTV, it does also make you wonder whether there is actually some secret pact that people using HDMI technology have agreed.

When I bought my PS3 from a large high street retailer, I said I needed a cable as one didn't come in the box. The sales assistant then led me to the HDMI cables which pretty much had a large dedicated wall. They basically ranged from normal, to gold plate, to crafted by god himself. I then asked which was the cheapest and he pointed it out, but it was still very expensive, I forget how much. He then, rather unexpectedly mentioned that they had a bunch of end of the line ones, somewhere else in the store. So he leads me right to the back of the store where there are a bunch of random cables and some HDMI ones for really cheap. I then say "Well I might as well go with this, as there is no difference over HDMI right...." He happily agrees with me, and that was that.

But clearly there is a big market here for cables, with HD on everything now, and a lot of people will probably be easily suckered into it.

So he leads me right to the back of the store

I was half expecting some kind of Lovecraftian tale of hdmi cables made of alien metal sheathed in an unidentifiable skin that writhed before the eye as if aware of, and repulsed by, your viewing.

As for games, well Nokkon has mentioned some good ones, and I would also recommend Uncharted, Rachett & Clank & Ninja Gaiden Sigma which can all be brought cheap now..

I left the first 2 because I thought they bordered a little too much on shooting, particularly Uncharted (and if you're mentioning Uncharted, why not Metal Gear Solid 4 ;)). Ninja Gaiden Sigma is a great shout though.

Average joe wouldnt know what resolution and frequency a cable carries by essentially judging the connector. A cable is a cable to a lot of people, a lot of people go by whether it fits or not lol.

Theres no way in hell most of my mates (even HDTV owners) and ALL my family would understand what HDMI was and the alike.

Frequency is completely irrelevant

However Im sure most would notice how terrible it looked compared to set up in the shop and wonder why, at this point its pretty easy to ask anyone even if you cant be bothered to rtfm

On the other hand they may also think "why does this picture look so much worse than a normal tv picture, when it should look better"......

Its a business decision. How many ps3 or 360 users will own or have access to a hd ready tv? By giving them the cables for sd tv's rather than cables for both sd and hd tv's they cut potential losses from sales of cables that won't be used.

same thoughts here, a business decision of the most effective solution. OP didn't see the fact that not everyone has a HDTV yet.

Beside, it's not as if Sony didn't even bother to include an AV cable and scart adaptor just to cut cost by assuming everyone will have a spare set. That would have **** everyone for being a cheapskate

6 sentences is hardly a rant tbh :p

I know lol.

As to limiting my choices in games its down to the pad. i am a mouse/ keyboard guy and find the joypad a pain.

I guess i ranted becuse the shops were closed i have to pop down the shop to get it. I fully understand why the cable is not inluded, always have. Remember i said it was a peter griffin rant, when has he made sense( you need to see family guy for this):D

Sigma is on the list as it was the best game on the old xbox. Will try uncharted, thanks for recomendations.

That was his point.. he'd do it automatically ;)

My very tech savvy friend who has had a 360 from launch decided to buy an elite last week and didn't know whether it came with an HDMI cable, so he asked the guy in the rubbish overpriced store who told him it didn't and then proceeded to try and sell him some £50 chav cable.

Thankfully my friend had enough sense to realise he was being conned, but still bought the store branded cable for £15! I mocked him good :D

Your friend got off lightly asking to pay 50 quid for a HDMI cable. When i got my HDTV i was asked what i was hooking it up to. I said PS3, so he took me to the HDMI cable section in which he said,

"Right, this is your standard £80 HDMI cable. I wouldn't recommend it. It doesn't operate at the speed PS3 processes graphics at."
"On the other hand, we have this £160 HDMI cable which will do everything. It will even do your surround sound aswell."

I lol'd vigorously.

Yeah if you are whinging about the lack of a £5 hdmi cable then think about having to buy a £50 wireless adaptor and then fork out every time you want to buy a new controller for the rechargeable battery pack.

I know that id rather buy a £5 hdmi cable myself. Seems like both the points you complained about are pretty irrelevant. If your console was never updated I think there would be a lot more complaints than "I have to wait 25 minutes". Go make a cup of tea.

ROFL :D

You include the most commonly available cable to allow the console to be plugged into near enough any TV, So the console provider isn't forcing or pushing HDMI.

The cable is always available as an extra and is often thrown in for free as part of an offer anyways.

But trying to keep costs down, why put a HDMI cable in every box, when HDMI is probably not used all that often house to house hold.

I mean i remember seeing so many HDMI vs , comparison threads on here in the beginning, from people who hadn't used it. And they only changed because they were told to do so, by gamers.

The average console owner, probably hasn't even thought to change to a HDMI cable or may not even know what one is
