A rented house. Do you decorate?

I live in a rented apartment and yes, but only remedial or aesthetic work. This is mainly because the landlord is private (and it's their only rental property, was originally bought for their son) and so we have pretty free reign. I also fix most things that I can; fitted a new bathroom light and TV aerial in the attic (including wiring to two rooms). They paid for the parts but I did the work.

Council flat is slightly different to a rented property, as it's likely to be more permanent with the former.

Unless it's hanging curtains (unfurnished place) and possibly giving it a bit of paint then no, absolutely not. Total waste of money.

Consider this... how much nicer a place could you get if you spread the cost you would have blown on decorating on a better rented property. Use your head :-) (Or as above... any money on decorating.. put towards a deposit for a house of your own).

In my days of renting, I usually didn't bother. However, one place was pretty good so I did paint it. When the landlord put it up for sale he gave me the last month for free in exchange, as the painting helped the sale. However, I'll bet money things like that are pretty rare. I'm temporarily in rented now, and there's no way I'd bother here, even if I was stuck here for a couple of years (I really hope not...)
