Hi all,

I'm looking at returning to VR gaming, a few years ago I had a pretty decent racing sim setup with using the Oculus CV2.
But since then I've not kept track and there seems to be vastly more options available, tether free, better resolutions and generally a load more manufacturers, of which I have no idea which is worth it and what isn't.

My system specs are:
13700k @5.8
7900xtx
32gb DDR5 7200mhz

Play a mixture of things really, want to try it and see how things have progressed, I'd like to be able to really show off the abilities of vr to the fullest to friends and family, and have the best experience really.

What's regarded as the best headset available? I like the idea of being free of the cables, but not at the cost of IQ and features.

I've had a look at the Quest 3 which seems popular, but would love to hear some first hand experiences.

Thanks

As you play a mix of things you can't go wrong with a Quest 3. As long as your home network setup is sufficient wireless roomscale gaming is really good, it does well as a wired pcvr gaming headset too. Edit : pcvr gaming means games running on your pc that are streamed to your Quest by a USB cable ("link cable") or by 5GHz wifi. The Q3 is quite good at standalone games too (no pc required) as it has a not too shabby onboard gpu+cpu.

Btw you can buy a Quest 3 for £387 (normal price is £479) from Very if you are a new customer and select Buy Now Pay Later, there's no interest for 12 months and you can pay it off immediately if you want to.

Definitely quest 3 is your best bet. One of the better PCVR headsets regardless, it's also the best standalone set out there too. Don't sleep on standalone, and mixed reality has some real strengths (and is a great way to introduce family to vr.

Quest 3 is your best bet for value VR

Pimax or Somnium VR1 is your best bet for quality VR

Yes there is a price difference, yes there is a quality difference.

Is Quest 3 the best headset available? that depends on your priorities... is it the best quality you have your answer try some out see what you think

Sorry, but Somnium VR1 is not released yet. And Pimax is often reported to be far from user friendly. If the OP wants to show off VR to friends and family too, then the q3 hits the nail on the head.

Thanks for all the replies, really appreciate it, it seems the Q3 gets the thumbs up then! And that Very deal seems too good to pass up.

Is the 512gb one worth the extra?
Whether it's worth it or not depends on what u intend to do with your Quest 3. If u think you'll be installing lots of games, apps, movies, etc, on the Quest 3 then you might need the extra space. At the moment i'm probably doing 50/50 on pcvr gaming and standalone gaming and have a couple of movies on it, i have the 128GB and have plenty of space left. Games/apps/movies are getting bigger so maybe in time the bigger storage option will be more relevant. If i ever hit my storage limits i'll just remove stuff i don't need.

VR1 is due out pretty soon probably early 2024, if you're looking at high end you'd be mad to ignore that.

Pimax is not particularly user friendly for beginners, once it is setup and running well it probably delivers the best visuals there are right now in VR far above what Q3 can do. So if visuals are your priority you definitely want a Pimax Crystal over a Q3. If you want a pickup and go solution then yes a Q3 or PSVR2 is a better option. Plus the Pimax Crystal will be getting a Wigig2 wireless module which again will far exceed the Airlink solution from Meta.... at a price of course.

Q3 is a good solution for the right customer only they can decide. What I would say though if you are buying blind without testing and comparing headsets then Q3 is a safe bet because you'll always be able to sell it and upgrade if that is the path you want to go down.

1st point -

best Quality headset money can buy right now i think is the Vajaro ?

2nd point -

Oculus (or now Meta) are one of those that have the majority of sales in the VR world (think Xbox Vs PlayStation or Ford Vs Vauxhall)

so what i am getting at is, the Quest 3 can be wireless (completely) or tethered and does a very good job at showing off the graphics in VR

Quest 3 would be my choice here

Thanks buddy,

Got the Quest 3 in the end and very happy with it, not had a great deal of time to actually play some games.

Tempted my the saints and sinners game, I hear the first 1 is apparently better, Into the radius maybe, I had Onwards for my CV2 but I have to buy it again, tempted to give Pavlov a go instead.

Onward is available on the Steam or Meta store, i'm not sure where u bought it but either of them will work on your Quest 3 if you play the pcvr version of Onward (game runs on your pc and is streamed to your Quest). But only the Meta store Onward will come with a standalone version (game runs on your Quest - no pc required).

The Quest 3 is amazing for the price, those lenses are fab! once meta update the link app resolution to look like virtual desktop without the compression I’ll be a happy bunny

I’ve retired my G2 when sim racing and I think I may sell my triple monitors now too

Thanks Chris, I'm enjoying it I must day, tried Blades and Sorcery but it made me feel a bit sick, will come back to that when I've grow a bit more accustom to VR again.
Been playing Pavlov shack, Onward and Contractors which are great, yet to play Saints and Sinners but it's there ready to install.
