is it really worth the switch from nvidia to ati
do i get a 5870 to replace my 295 ?
im not going to bother waiting till nvidia's we release

More of a sidegrade than an upgrade, you'd be getting similar performance if not a bit better with the 295. Only real benefit is dx11 which at this moment in time is being slapped into games any way game devs can get it in just so the box can say "dx11 supported".

hmmm

you could probably sell the 295 for the fat end of the cost of a new 5870, at worst you may have to put a few quid to it. If you play a variety of games you may not notice the difference overall - somegames the 295 beats the 70 by a few fps, some it loses a few.

For very little or no outlay you'd get a brand new card that runs cooler, quieter and uses less juice than your 295 by a long way. It has dx11, the ability to run 3 monitors for some eyefinity goodness and also a new full warranty. The decider for me would be that your 295 is probably at it's peak used price now - in a years time I'd wager the 5870 will have retained a higher resale value than the 295 by a fair margin. Add to this the ability to add another 5870 in the future which is better utilised (2 way crossfire against 4 way sli).

Woa, no dual GPU issues is a big plus, also power is better on the 5870

Well I have a GTX295 sitting here on the shelf and a 5970 in the gaming PC. I've had a few issues getting the best out of it, but the image quality is better than the GTX295 and in the games I play it is much smoother.

It does seem to run a lot hotter on auto fan than the 295 did.

Meh, i wouldn;t say its worth flogging the 295 for. In terms of performance he's most likely going to see zero gain, in some cases it will be a bit slower. Obviously get the odd game where sli doesn't work but theyre pretty few and far between.

A 295 to a 5970 though i could see the point.:)

Yeah well I would sell up and get shot of that EOL old tech while you can, my OC 5870 will blow any 295 away and DX11 is coming on strong, BFBC2 next month will rock, yet those with overpriced DX10 cards are missing out on the DX11 goodness.

There's no point me typing this out all over again. ;)

Doubtful, at stock speeds the 295 is somewhat faster. Not as if it can't be overclocked.

Nah, I well beat oveclocked 295's in many benchmarks/games, I'm a good 10FPs quicker in the crysis bench, 295 may surpass in the odd game "TWIMTBP games mainly " but not by much. That's why if you own a 295 you should sell up while they are still worth something, get a card that's future proof and uses a hell of a lot less watts yet performs better.

Well this review says different

Not many have the 295 in the same review as the 5870, only one i seen upto now. Crysis is close but games like farcry 2 the 295 is ahead by a good 10fps or so.
